One of the main features of Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town is raising livestock to obtain various resources for crafting or selling for a profit. Horses (and other mounts) are unlike your farm's other animals. Though you need a Stable to house them (one Stables holds one mount), they do not need to be cared for or fed.
You can unlock the Stables by repairing the Broken Stables in Area Three, after which Nigel's Handiworks will sell more if you want them. You can tame one Brown Horse in Area Three also, while all other mounts can be purchased from the Pet Store, though some have unlock requirements. We have a full guide on mounts right here.

Taking Care of Animals
Feeding Animals
You will need Fodder to feed your animals, this can either be purchased from the General Store or grown on your farm. Eventually, manually refilling all the troughs in your barns and coops will get pretty tiresome, but that's where Silo's come in.
Repair the Dilapidated Silo in the third farm area to be able to store Fodder. You can then put Automatic Feeders (recipe obtained at Animal Care Level Six) in your barns and coops and link them to the Silo so that it will take Fodder from the Silo each morning to automatically feed your animals. You can then upgrade to a Silage to store even more Fodder at Nigel's Handiworks.
You can ring the bell outside your farm facilities on sunny days to allow your animals to graze.
Allowing them to graze for longer than an hour daily increases their happiness and raises their stats.
Caring for Animals
You will need to care for your animals on a daily basis if you want to make the most out of raising livestock. As long as your animals are happy and fed, they will produce items daily in terms of milk and eggs. Fur and wool can take a little longer, as the animal needs to regrow its coat before you can shear it again.
Produce does not carry over day-to-day, so you either collect it that day or you will lose it.
This doesn't apply to animals that need shearing, they will keep their long coat until you cut it.
Your animals will indicate whether they need shearing, brushing, petting, milking, or something else with little icons above their head. Performing these actions will increase the animal's happiness and friendship.
How Can I Unlock New Animal Types?
Caring for your animals by feeding them, collecting produce, and petting them will all increase your Animal Care Level. As your Animal Care level increases, you will unlock new animal breeds, get boosts to animal friendship and happiness, unlock breeding, new crafting recipes, and more.
Happiness and Friendship
Your animals have a Happiness and Friendship Level that can be viewed inside your farm facilities. Raising both of these is important as it affects the following.

- Chance to get + quality products

- Producing items
- Chance to get + quality products
How To Buy and Develop Farm Facilities
Once you have repaired the Dilapidated Coop and Dilapidated Barn, you can purchase more from Nigel's Handiworks in Olive Town, so you can house as many animals as you like.
You'll also be able to develop your farm facilities into bigger versions, such as a Big Barn or Big Coop, which will allow you to house more animals but also enable you to apply Breeding Kits to get more animals. Additionally, you can develop your Silo into a Silage to store more fodder at any time.
Developing your farm facilities does not improve existing facilities, so for example, purchasing a Big Barn will not replace your standard barn.
Each type of facility only holds a certain number of animals. You can check the table below to see how many animals can be housed in each building.

How To Breed Livestock
Once you have a Big Barn or Big Coop, you can purchase Breeding Kits by speaking to Patricia in the Animal Shop in Olive Town.
After you choose the animal you wish to apply the Breeding Kit to, it will either become pregnant if it is cattle, or an egg will appear in the coop if it is a chicken. After a few days, the baby animal will be born/will hatch, and a few days after that, it will grow into a full adult and start producing items.
How Can I Breed Animals?
To breed animals, you must meet the following requirements:
- Have a Big Barn and/or Coop
- Animal Care Level Five
- Have two of the same animal types (they don't need to share the same breed, so you can breed a Chicken and a Silkie Chicken)
- Have leveled the Friendship Level of the animal you wish to breed
- Have space in your Barn or Coop for the baby animal
