When you first unlock the Adventurer's Guild, you are directed to check out the Monster Eradication goals. These goals list out numerous targets within the Mines, Skull Cavern, and Volcano Dungeon. A little Stardew Valley-styled hit list, if you will. While some of the goals are pretty straightforward, like killing dust sprites, others don't give much detail about what does and doesn't count.

A hearty snack can make the difference in battle. What are the best meals for combat in Stardew Valley?
PostsOne of these generalized targets is the void spirits. What, in monster-slaying terms, counts as a void spirit? That's exactly the question this guide will answer, as well as where to find these "monsters" who stalk the rooms of the mines.
What Are Void Spirits?
Mod used in image: UI Info Suite 2 by AnnoszFive monsters count as void spirits and, depending on which ones you're gunning for, or what part of the game you are in, will tell you where you should be headed. However, they can all be found in The Mines. But not initially. That will be talked about further along in this guide.
The five classifications are:
- Shadow Brute
- Shadow Brute (Dangerous)
- Shadow Shaman
- Shadow Shaman (Dangerous)
- Shadow Sniper
Where To Find Void Spirits
Mod used in image: UI Info Suite 2 by AnnoszAs stated above, all the void spirits can be found in The Mines. However, the dangerous and Sniper variants of these spirits can only be found in what is called the Dangerous version of The Mines. This spin on The Mines can only be triggered by activating the Shrine Of Challenge or, after you meet Mr. Qi on Ginger Island, the Danger In The Deep quest.
The most common of the five void spirits are the Shadow Brute and Shadow Shaman. These two buddies, well, monsters really, don't require any additional triggers or goals to be active, not even the Monster Eradication goals need to be viewed before you find them.
The only requirement to spot, and ultimately kill, them is to make your way down to floor 81 in The Mines. From there, these two types of void spirits will spawn to floor 119. They stop just before floor 120, which is the final floor of the mines where no monsters spawn.

PostsHow Do You Kill Void Spirits?
Mod used in image: UI Info Suite 2 by AnnoszWhile there are some small tactics you can use against the void spirits to limit the amount of damage you take, you can just brute force (pun unintended) your way through the different Shadow Brute and Shadow Shaman variants. So, the simplest answer is to find the biggest sword you can and swing away at them.
If you want to approach the combat with a little more finesse, one of the best things to do is always target the Shadow Shaman first. They don't always spawn together, and there can be Brutes or Shamans who are completely alone. But you should always stay ready to fight Shadow Shaman on sight.
The reason for this is that Shadow Shaman have healing abilities. So all of your hard work chopping away at Brutes can be in vain if you don't have a strong weapon or kill them quickly. You may have to chase the Shamans down, as once their health is low, they will flee from you, but it's worth taking them out as soon as possible.
As well as healing enemies, Shadow Shaman can apply the Jinxed effect to you. This will lower your defense by eight whole points.
Things are more straightforward for killing Brutes. They will just keep walking you down and they resist being knocked back by clubs. So, all you can do is dish out a few hits and then start to back away before you try to finish the job and kill them. You can also use your Slingshot, Master Slingshot, or Galaxy Slingshot if they're far enough away.
Those same two strategies work for the Dangerous variants of the two. The only one that differs is the Shadow Sniper. These monsters can only take shots at you in a straight line. That leaves them open to you attacking them diagonally as they can't aim at you properly.
How Many Void Spirits Do You Have To Kill?
And What's The Reward?
Mod used in image: UI Info Suite 2 by AnnoszIf you are tracking down void spirits for the Monster Eradication goals, you will have to kill 150 of any kind of them. And this is a one-for-one kind of deal, meaning that, although more difficult to kill, the Dangerous Brutes and Shaman don't count as multiple spirits slain.
If you complete this goal, you are rewarded with the Savage Ring. This is a ring that many people wear once unlocked as it provides you with a boost of speed after you slay a monster. This is particularly helpful in the Skull Caverns as you want to descend as quickly as possible since your progress resets as soon as you leave.
