Summary

  • Star Wars Outlaws has bravely wade into the infamous "Han shot first" debate by including a little reference to the scene in Mos Eisley Cantina.
  • If players visit the area, you'll be able to see a black scorch mark on the wall behind where Han Solo was sitting, implying that Greedo got a shot off.
  • That means Star Wars Outlaws is sticking with the 1997 Special Edition version of events, claiming that Greedo did indeed shoot first.

Star Wars has been going for so long that you need an encyclopedia to keep track of all the intense debates fans have had over the years. However, one of the more well-known is the debate surrounding Han Solo and Greedo's encounter in Mos Eisley Cantina shortly before meeting Luke Skywalker.

We know that the encounter ends up with Greedo eating dirt, but who shot their weapon first has been an intense subject of debate for years. It all stems from a change made in the 1997 Special Edition of Star Wars: A New Hope, as George Lucas altered the scene to have Greedo take a shot at Han Solo, and then have Han kill him in retaliation. Originally, Han Solo shot Greedo outright before the bounty hunter could react.

Star Wars Outlaws Has Wade Into The "Han Shot First" Debate

It's yet another debate between originality versus revision, and it seems that the recently released Star Wars Outlaws has unwittingly chosen a side. First spotted by Reddit user Forestfee and shared with the Star Wars Outlaws subreddit, if you visit Mos Eisley Cantina on Tatooine, you can see a black mark on the wall in one of the booths, which looks to be a neat little reference to the scene between Han Solo and Greedo in A New Hope.

If you're familiar with the scene, you'll notice that the black scorch mark is actually on the wall behind the seat on which Han Solo sits, implying that Han was shot at during the altercation. In the original scene, Greedo doesn't get a shot off at all, so this little black mark is Star Wars Outlaws going with the revised edition of A New Hope and saying that Greedo did in fact shoot first.

Of course, this isn't too surprising considering George Lucas himself has clarified that he always intended for Greedo to shoot first, making it the more popular and canon choice. It's just a fun little reference in a game that is absolutely chock-full of them.

For example, Star Wars Outlaws lets you visit Tosche Station, the place which Luke Skywalker whines about wanting to visit in his famous "power converters" line, while Nix will also play dead if you try to shoot him. But you definitely wouldn't actually try to shoot Nix now, would you? Of course not, you're not a monster.
