Your last stop before signaling Atrus to come rescue you from Riven is Prison Island. You'll have been there before to get some clues, but most of the island is inaccessible; Gehn is the only one who knows how to get in and out of the fortress where Catherine is held, and he's not telling.

When you return from Age 233, you're very close to the end of the game. This guide will see you through the final steps; rescuing Catherine and calling for an escape from the decaying Fifth Age once and for all.

This guide is for entering the fortress on Prison Island at the endgame. For the clue to the totem puzzle, use the Jungle Island Guide.

How To Rescue Catherine

The lock on the front door to the fortress has a combination that only Gehn knows. The lock can be found to the right of the closed door; you need to press the three at the bottom buttons in a sequence that is randomly assigned at the start of each new playthrough.

Each button makes a different sound when pressed. To find the correct sequence, you need to listen to the sounds made by the silver object on Gehn's bedside table in Age 233 after defeating him. Once you've memorized the sequence, return to Prison Island and press the buttons, then pull the lever at the top of the mechanism. If you entered the correct code, the elevator will open.

Pull the chain in the elevator to go to Catherine's cell; she'll take the Trap Book off your hands and go to gather the Moiety. Your next and final task is to open the fissure on Temple Island, signaling Atrus to come and extract you.

How To Open The Fissure

Opening the fissure is the final thing to do in the game, as doing so will tear the world of Riven apart. To do so, you need to activate the panel in front of the cage where you first entered Riven on Temple Island by entering the passcodewritten in Catherine's journal.

Technically, you can enter the code and destroy Riven before rescuing Catherine, but you won't get the best ending this way.

Catherine has written the code using the Rivenese number system, while the control panel uses D'Ni numbers. You'll need to translate between the two. Luckily, by this point you're familiar with the basics of both. Once again, the code is randomized.

The panel must be powered in order to work; if steam isn't coming from it, go to the valve chamber in the rotating room and turn on the power.

When the ten-digit code is entered, a lever will emerge from the panel that you can use to move the rusted crane on the right. By rotating the panel you can change it between raising and lowering the crane or moving the crane left and right. Position the crane so that the bar at the top will fit into the handle at the top of the structure on the left, then move the crane all the way to the left.

Once the crane is in position, lift the structure by pushing the lever up until it's free; doing so unplugs the fissure and triggers the ending cinematic.
