  • Explore different character concepts like a Lolth-sworn drow or an Elturel Refugee tiefling to add depth to your gameplay.

Baldur's Gate 3 is an amazing game — the sheer number of people who loved it and the awards it received speak for themselves. Along with being an excellent RPG with wonderful characters and writing, it's also based on the Forgotten Realms, the most popular setting for Dungeons & Dragons tabletop games.

Because of that, this game is a beautiful way to learn more about this world and get you into D&D or create your tadpole adventurer based on the setting. Whether you're a D&D veteran wanting to test concepts or someone who wants to understand more about the world, we have a few ideas for what you can do with your next Tav.

8 DIY Githzerai

The Other Giths

One of the most distinct species in the game is the Githyanki, and their presence is very relevant to the overall story. They're the sworn enemies of the mind flayers, the main enemies of the game. However, when you play as a Gith yourself, the game doesn't change that much, which is a bit sad.

You can take this lack of changes to your advantage and improvise a Githzerai character — another group of Gith who are against mind flayers, but they don't share the violent culture of the Githyanki. To be clear, the Githzerai are not playable, but they look the same (they're technically the same species), so you could make one and act like it. Throw in the monk class, which is a standard class for them, given their more zen nature, and your character will look the part.

7 Dragonborn Tempest Cleric

Works For Good And Evil Characters

Clerics are one of the best classes for roleplay, as you have many deities to choose from, giving you dialogue choices. Dragonborns tend not to enjoy the gods or dragons due to being former servants. Still, you can pick two interesting deities here to make a unique religious Dragonborn: Bahamut and Tiamat.

Bahamut is one of the nicest deities in D&D, representing metallic dragons, while Tiamat is a force of pure evil, representing chromatic dragons. You can fit mechanics and roleplay even more here, since both the bronze (for metallic) and the blue (for chromatic) Dragonborns have lightning powers, which match with the Tempest Domain. So, you can make a master of electricity who follows Bahamut for the greater good or Tiamat for the greater evil.

6 Cleric Of Lolth

The Ultimate Evil

Though we won't focus entirely on clerics as there are too many options, another one worth mentioning is Lolth, a powerful demon and deity who rules over the drow and is responsible for making their culture so vile to the point most fear the sight of drows.

Drows by themselves are great to roleplay in Baldur's Gate 3, as many characters react to you being one, and you can choose to be a Lolth-sworn drow (one that grew up in such a culture). To step things up, you can be a proper cleric of Lolth and pick a fitting domain, like Trickery or War. We also recommend your character to be a woman, as the drow society is a matriarchy, with them and Lolth herself being quite sexist, so it makes more sense for a cleric to be a woman. And we recommend such a character for an evil playthrough.

5 The Anti-Lolth

Don't Be The Monster People Think You Are

You can also be a Seldarine drow, which is essentially a drow who wasn't raised like in Lolth's society. You can roleplay your character as someone who escaped that kind of life and is now living on the surface. But why not take a step further?

A fun match here is the Oath of Vengeance from Paladins. You can be a drow dedicated to destroying evil as you fight monsters until you can one day free your people from Lolth herself. Sure, that won't happen in the game, as Lolth is not even present here, but it's a fun character concept nonetheless.

4 The Rashemaar

More Than A Barbarian

If you're interested in making a barbarian, you can make your character native to Rashemen, the land of the berserkers. Despite being a group of barbarians, they're not the negative stereotype of them. They are known for wanting to learn more about the world through travel, welcoming challenges in a positive manner, and being very comfortable with their bodies.

These races match well with the Barbarian class in Baldur's Gate 3.

Rashemen mainly consist of humans and do have a specific ethnicity, in case you want to be as lore-accurate as possible. However, since humans are not the best race for barbarians, you could come up with an exception for your backstory, like having an orc parent so you can be a half-orc barbarian — a great combo of race and class.

3 Circle Of Spores Druid From The Underdark

Adapt To Your Environment

Druids also have a few fun ways to merge roleplay and combat. One of these ways is to use the Circle of Spores, known for turning corpses into servants, controlling them through spores in a very The Last of Us way. You can even meet myconids — creatures who do the same thing — when venturing through the Underdark.

To match this theme better, picking a species that comes from the Underdark as well, like the drow, the duergar, or the deep gnome, will be a fun combo between class and species for roleplaying reasons, and it fits for either a good or evil character well.

2 Emerald Enclave

Perfect For Nature-Related Characters

Another fun way to use the druid class — though a nature cleric would fit here, too — is to be a member of the Emerald Enclave. You won't technically be one, as you don't choose factions, but you can create your character around the idea.

However, it's a fun fit for species such as wood elves or forest gnomes, and it will give you a personal goal when dealing with the Emerald Grove in the game. Just for fun, too, a tiefling druid is a fun clash here for even more personal motivation with the Grove.

1 Elturel Refugee

Give Tieflings Some Love

One of the best-looking and most powerful species in the game is the tiefling, and they even have story connections to some events, as there are many refugees from the city of Elturel, as the tieflings there were chased off after they were blamed for the city being temporarily dragged into Hell.

You can include yourself in that, or simply roleplay as a sympathetic tiefling and help your people during this dire situation. As for class, a fun combo is sorcerer since it also relies on your Charisma, and you can use your infernal bloodline as a justification for your magic powers, creating another fun class-species combo.
