Bots are everywhere. The last time I played Final Fantasy 14, there were gold-farmers galore who had hacked their way below ground level in the Black Shroud near Gridania. Needless to say, the act of performing in-game tasks in order to make real-world money is prohibited by virtually every MMO, including Old School RuneScape.

Mind you, there are plenty of other use cases for bots in RuneScape. Macros can either hurt or help the in-game economy, depending on who you ask. Either way, they're no bueno by publisher Jagex's stated standards. One Old School RuneScape player recently deduced an at least temporarily foolproof method to discern the identities of LMS bot users, and uh, the results speak for themselves.

Botters Hate These Two Simple Words

We caught wind of this one via Massively Overpowered before doing a bit of digging, ourselves. A Redditor who goes by the name of Lepton_Decay posted their findings to r/2007scape, and they're glorious. "How Many". That's all Lepton_Decay had to type into Old School RuneScape's chat function, and suddenly, hundreds of bots were posting huge strings of numbers, outing themselves for what they truly are.

Look at that. Look at that number string. And it gets even better. An Old School RuneScape moderator, Mod Pheasant, tested out the trick firsthand to similarly glorious results:

Some players have pointed out that, despite the incredible twist in deducing who's using such scripting in the game, this won't ultimately amount to much. Setting up LMS scripts doesn't take long, so plenty of these people will return, and while I'm hardly an expert on this, I reckon the creators will find ways to circumvent the issue. (At least in theory, it sounds like a rather simple fix, no?)

Nevertheless, it's a spectacular find, and one of the funniest things I've read about RuneScape in a very long time. Old School RuneScape breaking its CCU less than a month ago is still a close second, though.
