Summary

  • Yesterday's PS5 update caused players' dashboards to be flooded with ads.
  • This has since been reversed, removing the ads from PS5 Game Hubs.
  • PlayStation says this was due to a "tech error", and distatic.aayyy.com/topic/dn/'t intend to fill the dashboard with ads.

A controversial side effect of yesterday's PS5 system update has been reversed. Now, players won't be spammed with excessive ads when they hover over a game they own, with PlayStation saying that this wasn't supposed to happen in the first place.

As many noted yesterday, Game Hubs had been updated to show updates from the PS5 news system. However, in practice, this just meant that loads of ads for other games would take up the screen - often ads for games that players already owned. This was met with a lot of backlash, but was quickly removed.

Now, Sony says that this was all due to a "tech error", suggesting that it never intended the new Game Hubs to be full of advertisements.

Sony Revereses PS5 Dashboard Ads Update

The issue with Game Hubs seemed to be especially problematic with recent games. This was noted by players online, who shared that their dashboards became overrun with ads if they hovered over games like Space Marine 2 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

While PlayStation is now saying that this was a bug, many were quick to assume that this was the update working as intended. It's easy to see why, as ads have been increasingly creeping their way into console dashboards, with Xbox players previously complaining that they are being shown full-page ads. Couple this with the PS5's lack of dynamic themes that we got on PS4, and it's unsurprising that many through Sony really was planning to bombard us with ads.

However, this part of the update has now been reversed. PSN is also back online, after an outage earlier in the day.
