Summary

  • PlayStation Plus will be getting a price increase in certain regions, Sony has revealed.
  • Citing "global market conditions," countries like Brazil and other areas such as Australia and South Korea will see a price hike as soon as next week.
  • So far, North America has not been impacted, though the region did receive a price increase back in 2023.

If you happen to live in South America, Oceania or certain Asian countries, then your PlayStation Plus subscription costs will be going up. In total, over 20 areas, including Australia and South Korea, will be impacted by these changes, with Sony citing "global market conditions" as the reason behind the swift increases.

As it stands, the changes will go into effect beginning next week on April 16. If you're a current subscriber to PlayStation Plus, then you won't see a change until your next billing date, on or after June 24. That said, if you happen to modify your subscription in any form, i.e. changing/downgrading tiers, then those changes will be reflected immediately.

Nintendo Switch 2’s Variable Pricing Doesn’t Make Any Sense Whatsoever

Mario Kart World is retailing for $80 on Nintendo Switch 2, so why aren't any other games hitting this price point?

"Like many businesses around the world, we continue to be impacted by global market conditions and will be adjusting our local prices for PlayStation Plus," a note on the PlayStation Blog read. "This price adjustment will enable us to continue bringing high-quality games and value-added benefits to your PlayStation Plus subscription service."

As Insider Gaming noted, users in Brazil will now pay 546.90 Brazilian Reals for a 12-month PS Plus Extra subscription, representing a 12 percent increase. Converting that to USD is about $92, where North American subscribers pay $99.99 for a 12-month extra plan.

While the price changes do ensure more of a consistent global pricing strategy, they seemingly do not take into account the various global economic factors that would make a price increase less palatable.

North America Is Not Impacted, Yet

So far, it seems like PlayStation gamers in North America will be spared from these price hikes, though that could ultimately change down the line.

The last time that PS Plus increased in the NA region was in mid 2023. At the time, the Essential, Extra, and Premium tiers were priced at $59.99, $99.99 and $119.99, respectively. However, with the increase, they jumped to 7$9.99, $134.99 and $159.99.

Whereas Sony cited the global market for this recent increase, back in 2023, the company said that the increases would "enable us to continue bringing high-quality games and value-added benefits to your PlayStation Plus subscription service."

Back in October, a player spent around $1400 to stack their PS Plus subscription from now through 2048 to avoid situations like this. Friday's batch of news will likely influence others to potentially do the same in hopes of getting ahead of further increases.
