Reading is a great way to increase your stats, open up new areas, and pick up various perks in Persona 5, and fortunately, Persona 5 Royal improved on this by adding even more books for you to utilize. However, most books only become available after a certain date or after you have met a certain requirement.

It's important to always have a few books on hand as there will be opportunities for you to read while on the train or when in class (if you raise your confidant rank with Kawakami). Here is a full list of every book you can get in Persona 5 Royal, where to get it, and what it does.
One reading session will complete one chapter of a book, so this means it often requires two or even three sessions to complete a book.
However, eventually, you read the Speed Reader book, which allows you to read two chapters at a time.

Shujin School Library
You can borrow one book at a time from the Shujin school library, so you have to return the last one before you can borrow the next one. More books will become available as the story progresses.
You should borrow and read Speed Reader as soon as it becomes available to reduce the time it takes to read each book.

Trader Sakai is a special NPC in Kichijoji that will request specific items and trade them for something else. One of the items he will give you is a book.
