The Persona series is one that oozes charm and excellent design. It’s a series that has somehow made doing the most mundane things possible, like taking tests and going to work, vital and fun aspects of gameplay. How the team behind the games managed that is an absolute mystery.

While Persona 4 Golden is one of the favorites of the series for a lot of people, it is by no means a perfect game. Even though it is an enhanced edition of the original game, with some fantastic bosses to boot, there are still a number of ways to improve things here and there in relatively major ways.

10 Even More Voice Acting

If there’s one thing that everyone can agree on, it’s that having solid voice work is much better than simply reading through some flavor text. Considering Persona 4 Golden is filled to the brim with excellent vocal performances, it only makes sense that even more of those voices would make it even better.

While there is already a staggering amount of voiced lines in the games, there is still a fairly solid chunk of unvoiced dialogue as well. Specifically, fully voiced social links would have really added a ton of weight to some of the best side stories in the game.

9 Improved Dungeon Design

One of the biggest complaints Persona 4 Golden gets is the lack of creativity when it comes to dungeon design. Luckily, that is something that Persona 5 had no issue addressing. In Persona 4 Golden, most of the dungeons are fairly straightforward events.

There are small puzzles in them to break up the exploration, but the simplistic layouts don’t actually incentivize any exploration, something that will bite players in the butt deeper into the game if they’ve formed such a habit. The themes of the dungeons are great, so just a change to the layouts and exploration would have helped.

8 More Motion In Cutscenes

This is admittedly a small adjustment, but it’s one that probably would have added a lot of additional personality into a game that already oozes personality. Many of the cutscenes are the characters huddled and talking with some running and walking mixed in.

It wouldn’t be a surprise that most people remember the scenes with much more movement involved. A little bit of extra motion would fit in perfectly in a lot of scenes, but considering the cutscenes aren’t a problem at all, this is more of a minor ask.

7 More Puzzles

As previously mentioned, some players aren’t thrilled about the dungeon-crawling aspect of this game, and a big part of that is a lack of quality puzzles. Realistically, none of the puzzles in the various dungeons are all that good and simply serve as minor distractions to lengthen the dungeons.

Throwing in a few more puzzles in each dungeon with varying levels of creativity could have made them feel like a true ordeal. Most skilled players won’t have any issue doing a dungeon in a single day, so puzzles that punish incorrect solutions with drained SP could have been a unique twist.

6 A Customizable Avatar

For whatever reason, it’s quite rare to find people talking about wanting a customizable avatar character in the Persona games. The character already doesn’t talk much, so their design being player selected wouldn’t shift things all that much.

It would limit your character being in the anime cutscenes, but that could be worked around by having those cutscenes play out through your eyes so you are still involved in the shenanigans with your friends. A customizable character would probably add a whole new depth to the game when it comes to connecting with the fantastic cast.

5 Optional Team Members

At first, this idea may be a bit strange, but simply letting some of the other social links you form with characters result in them being able to join you in dungeons could have been fantastic. It might be a bit weird to not include them in major story moments, but that would be a minor price for varied gameplay.

This kind of change would also add a lot of incentive for players to seek out the many social links once they realize they can grow their roster of playable characters. This could make some of the lesser-liked characters become fan favorites for being beasts on the battlefield.

4 Add More Incentive To Use Newer Party Members

Speaking of party members, some more incentive to use the ones you get later into the game would be much better. Many players end up sticking with the initial four characters throughout the entire game, so making Teddy, Naoto, and Kanji a bit better from the start would be great.

You could argue that they do become useful quite quickly in various situations in the dungeons following when you acquire those characters, but at the same time, you’ll probably have already worked out a killer strategy for your core four party members. Once again, this is another problem Persona 5 managed to address.

3 Additional Areas to Explore

While the additions that Persona 4 Golden made actually did include new areas to explore, there’s always room for more dungeons and towns. A really solid late-game addition would be to add some kind of area that let you increase multiple social links at the same time.

Some kind of group hangout spot for some unique scenes with a bunch of characters could add a lot of fun and surprising interactions to the game. At the same time, something like this would help players with final clean-up in the late game when they’re running out of time for social links.

2 A Dungeon For Training And Exploration

Adding in a dungeon specifically dedicated to things like grinding, finding rare or even unique personas, and simply exploring for hidden items and boss fights would be great. Instead of it being story or time-based, just let the dungeon be a solid challenge floor by floor, one that players will have to pull out of.

Something like this would keep players from being under-leveled while rewarding skilled players with extra experience or strong items for taking on riskier fights. This would give you more reason to enter the TV world aside from a few optional bosses and side quests for decent items.

1 More Unique Twists For Dungeons

It can’t be said enough that the ideas for the dungeons in the games were fantastic and unique. With that said, there really could have been a lot more twists to come across in those dungeons. Take the retro-game-themed dungeon for instance, some kind of actual classic video game twist could have been a fun challenge with a bit of foreshadowing.

Then there’s Naoto’s secret laboratory dungeon. Throwing in an overpowered enemy that follows you around throughout much of the dungeon would keep you on your toes, and force you to make some tough decisions while navigating.
