The 10 Best Items In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Ranked

Summary
- Don't underestimate the power of items in battles - they can level the playing field and provide strategic advantages.
- Seek out the best items like Thunder Rages and Jammin' Jellies for effective offensive and defensive gameplay.
- Keep Life Mushrooms on hand to avoid game over situations - simple items can sometimes be the most crucial.
While on your adventure in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, you will be tasked with overcoming obstacles and fighting enemies that grow more powerful the further you progress. While your weapons and partners can be upgraded to deal with the increased challenge, sometimes, you need a little extra help that won't break the bank like some badges can.

Mario and his friends will travel to many regions during their adventure in The Thousand-Year Door, but which one is the best?
PostsItems can level the playing field immensely, and also provide more complex strategies for you to take advantage of in battle. Not all items are created equally, however, and the items that are the best of the best should be sought out and used at every opportunity. Don't overlook these powerful tools, and make sure to take advantage of them.
10 Cake Mix
Let Them Eat Cake
Don't scoff at the power of the mighty Cake Mix. While this particular item might seem underwhelming at first, especially since it only restores a single FP, it's how you use it that makes it powerful.
Cake Mix can be brought to Zess T. in Rogueport and turned into an incredibly diverse list of other items. It can be turned into, well, various cakes (big surprise there) with great healing effects, many of which will prove an asset on your long journey.
9 Volt Mushroom
A Shock To The Senses
Give enemies the true pain and terror of getting the nastiest static electric shock of their lives by eating a Volt Mushroom in battle. These shocking little fungi will wrap whoever eats them in a protective layer of electricity, damaging anyone or anything that touches the electric shield.

You can only keep one out with you at a time, after all.
Posts 1It doesn't do too much damage, but sometimes the chip damage can mean the difference between victory and defeat. They make a very good defensive/offensive tool to use, so don't overlook them. They also aren't too expensive either, making them accessible.
8 Thunder Rage
Very Frightening
Keeping with this shocking theme, Thunder Rages are a great item to get a hold of if you can. These bolts from the blue will drop lightning bolts on all enemies in a battle for five damage a piece.
As one of the more powerful combat items, Thunder Rages are surprisingly affordable as well. A Thunder Rage will cost you on average 15–20 coins at the shops where they are offered, so don't be afraid to pick some up. Their ability to hit all enemies is a very powerful feature that not all items share.
7 Ultra Mushroom
A Potent Mushroom
In the realm of HP recovery, not many items offer the whopping 50 HP total that Ultra Mushrooms do. These fungi will be one of the most potent tools for keeping yourself alive you have access to.
RelatedBest Badges In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
A Badge for every occasion.
PostsThe major downside to them is that they are particularly rare, or incredibly expensive. You can purchase them for 200 coins a shroom in the shop beneath Rogueport, or pick up some of the few that can be found out and about. Another way to obtain them is in the Pianta Parlor in later chapters.
6 Jammin' Jelly
Spread With Joy
The FP equivalent to Ultra Shrooms, Jammin' Jellies, will give you a massive 50 FP per use, letting you use all the badge and partner skills you could ever want. This gooey treat will keep your battles fresh and fun, and is another powerful item to keep a look-out for.
Also, like Ultra Shrooms, these jellies are a little on the rarer and expensive side. They can be bought in the underground shop at Rogueport for 200 coins a jar or found in the field as a treasure or a reward.
5 Shooting Star
Wish For Damage
Shooting stars are usually looked at as a beautiful sight in the real world, but in the world of Paper Mario, Shooting Stars are a deadly weapon. This battle item can really bring the hurt to your foes, dealing six damage to every enemy on the field, along with a flashy animation.
The only downside to using Shooting Stars over other damaging battle items is the price and availability. For 30 coins a star, they are a little pricier than other similar options, and can only be bought once you reach Fahr Outpost late in the game.
4 Whacka Bump
Hit The Mole You Monster
The most intense game of whack-a-mole will yield you these lumps of health and vitality. When hitting the rare Whacka with your hammer, it will drop these bumps that restore 25 HP and FP when used. Whacka Bumps are incredibly nutritious and versatile.
Be aware, however, that the Whacka can only be found once you reach Keelhaul Key, and that the amount of bumps you can receive is finite. Once you have procured eight of them, the Whacka will disappear forever. Then again, you'd never hit a defenseless Whacka, would you?
3 Zess Dynamite
The Big Boom
Cooking is an art, and art is an explosion. The Zess Dynamite is a signature dish you can have Zess T. create by combining a Coconut Bomb with an Egg Bomb. The resulting culinary masterpiece can be used to blow up groups of enemies for seven damage each, one of the highest totals in the game for an item.

PostsWhile some things have changed between the original Thousand-Year Door and the remake, cooking still remains one of the best ways to get the best items. If you combine a Coconut with a Fire Flower, and a Mystic Egg with a Fire Flower, that will give you the base ingredients needed for your newest, favorite dish. Happy blasting.
2 Jelly Ultra
The Ultimate Snack
Probably the very best healing item in the game, the Jelly Ultra is the natural result of combining an Ultra Mushroom with a Jammin' Jelly. What kind of person thought to slather jelly on top of a mushroom? Zess T. of course, as this is another item she can make for you in her kitchen.
Don't write her off as weird though, because these treats restore an amazing 50 HP and 50 FP per use, a truly staggering amount. Whether or not a jelly-covered fungus would actually taste good, you can't deny it's an incredibly effective dish.
1 Life Mushroom
Your Lifeline
The best item to always carry around with you in The Thousand-Year Door has to be the Life Mushroom. These little guys will save you from a game over if you happen to die while carrying one, reviving you with 10 HP in the middle of battle.
They won't save you if you make poor decisions outside of battle, like cheating at the Rogueport lottery!
Compared to other items, Life Mushrooms are very simple, and not at all flashy. Sometimes, however, the simple and un-flashy items tend to do the job that's most needed in a playthrough, namely, keeping you alive. Always keep one (or multiple) around just in case you miss an action command or get caught by surprise.
