Each story in Layers Of Fear (2023) has multiple endings, usually influenced by choices that seem subtle or insignificant on a first playthrough. The first side story, originally a DLC for the first game in the franchise, is no different. While it takes an hour or less to play, Inheritance will require at least three runs if you want to see all possible endings.

If you keep seeing the same ending over and over, or just can't quite figure out the trick to viewing the True Ending, this guide breaks down exactly what you need to do. Will your story end in Resentment, Forgiveness, or will you discover a hidden secret?
Resentment And Forgiveness Endings
The Daughter's Story, Inheritance, can be played after completing the Painter's Story by reading the book on the desk to the right of the typewriter in the lighthouse. It follows the Daughter, now an adult, as she explores the empty house. This story has three endings: Resentment, Forgiveness, and a hidden True Ending.
Your actions over the course of the run will cause the Daughter to lean either toward forgiving her father or fostering a lifelong resentment of him. In each room of the house, you'll trigger a flashback. Take the following actions to build toward the ending that you want to see:
Room
Forgiveness
Resentment
Pantry
- Lock the door before the Painter enters.
- Let the Painter find you in the Pantry.
Basement
- Pick up the sheet music to the right of the piano.
- Approach the Painter without giving him the sheet music.
Studio
- Use the paintbrush instead of the crayon.
- Apply all the paint layers correctly; red, then black, then yellow.
- Repeatedly use the crayon.
Musician's Bedroom
- Play the gramophone to soothe the Musician.
- Ignore the gramophone and let the Musician suffer in silence.
Upstairs Living Room
- Pet the dog to get it off the couch before the Painter arrives.
- Ignore the dog and let the Painter yell at you.
Daughter's Bedroom
- Keep the Painter and his canvas in view.
- This is much easier with a controller than with a mouse and keyboard.
- Let your view automatically drift away from the Painter.
Office
- Whenever the path splits, take the right-hand path with the Painter's portrait.
- After using the crayons to draw on the piano, play the notes indicated by the shapes drawn on the sheet music.
- Interact with the drawing of the Musician after reassembling it.
- Whenever the path splits, take the left-hand path with the Musician's portrait.
- Consistently play the wrong notes on the piano.
- Ignore the drawing after reassembling it.
There is a flashback in the Kitchen that you can't interact with, but viewing it pushes the Daughter toward Forgiveness. If you're going for Resentment, stay out of the kitchen entirely.
After you've completed the main rooms, the door to the Playroom, next to the Musician's bedroom, will unlock. You'll find out which ending you got when you go inside, based on whether you took more Resentment or Forgiveness actions.

True Ending
To get the True Ending, you'll need to collect all the Daughter's childhood drawings throughout the house and complete the run with full Forgiveness. Drawings will appear in each room, though some only do so after completing the room's flashback. Some will only drop drawings if you choose the Forgiveness outcome, hence the need to focus on that route while collecting them.
Room
Drawing Location
Pantry
On the floor in front of the door after completing the challenge.
Kitchen
On the wall of the back storage room after the flashback.
Basement
On the crates in front of the piano after the flashback.
Studio
On the desk, immediately to your left after completing the challenge.
Musician's Bedroom
In the closet immediately to the right when you enter.
Upstairs Living Room
On the small table just outside the Musician's Bedroom.
Daughter's Bedroom
At your feet after completing the challenge.
Office
On the desk after completing the challenge.
Failed Painting Storage Room
In the corner to the right after entering.
When you have all nine drawings, do not open the Playroom door. Instead, return to the Studio and place the drawings on the wall where you triggered the room's flashback. You'll be able to swap the drawings' positions one at a time. Arrange them so that the black lines form a face; the Daughter will speak when it's complete. The correct order is:
Musician In Bed
Looking Out Window
Dog Destroying Dolls
Sitting For A Portrait
Surrounded By Mousetraps
Failed Paintings
Big Scary Door
Playing The Piano
Cooking The Dog
When the Daughter finishes speaking, turn aroundand examine the cabinet behind you to reveal the True Ending.
