Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess - Every Villager Role And When It Unlocks

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is a game unlike many others. It has competent combat for its main character, Soh, while also giving you many villagers to cover your own weaknesses across its tower defence-adjacent levels. You can't cover the entire map yourself, after all. The villagers are your backup, and you need to use them to the best of your ability.

I've never played a game quite like this one, and you can play a bit of it too, for free!
PostsTo that end, you have the many Roles that the game doles out as you complete missions, letting you build a versatile group to counter any scenario. Read on to find out everything you need to know about each role, from when you get them to what they specialise in.
Thankfully, every Role in Kunitsu-Gami is unlocked over the course of the main story so there's no chance of missing them.
How Many Roles Are There?
While you start with only the humble Woodcutter, the Roles available to the villagers will expand as you progress through the game, from attackers to utility and every base in between. In total, there are 12 Roles for you to choose from, though none of them are simply better than others.
Each Role below is listed in the sequential order in which you unlock them.
Role
Role Cost
Specialisation
When It Unlocks
Woodcutter
50 Crystals
Best against small groups of enemies in melee range and chasing stragglers.
Unlocked from the beginning
Archer
50 Crystals
Best against flying and small enemies. Can attack in melee-range, but are much less effective.
Defeat Gakinyudo
Ascetic
150 Crystals
Used to create an area of effect around them that dramatically slows any enemy around them. Great for holding chokepoints.
Defeat Kamaitachi
Thief
50 Crystals
Can pick locks and dig up buried treasure. Go into hiding during the night.
Defeat Mukadejoro
Sumo Wrestler
300 Crystals
Exclusive to Male Villagers. Has high HP and decent damage. Aggroes enemies in a large area around themselves to keep them away from other units and Yoshiro.
Complete Enri Village
Shaman
150 Crystals
Exclusive to Female Villagers. Deals no damage and has low HP, but can heal all units around herself during the night. She cannot heal herself.
Defeat Tsurube-Otoshi
Spearman
100 Crystals
Melee unit that is more effective against single larger enemies but struggles with groups. Cannot chase enemies.
Defeat Batsu
Marksman
150 Crystals
Ranged unit with much higher damage and range, but lower firing rate than the Archer. Very powerful, but even less effective in melee range.
Defeat Bupposo
Priest
100 Crystals
Used to remove buffs from enemies, making them very situational. Can be upgraded to remove toxic pools and enemy possession.
Defeat Notsugo
Cannoneer
150 Crystals
A slow-firing, long-range unit. Has no melee capabilities and a very slow firing rate. Great against groups and for knockback.
Complete The Great Cherry Tree Of Nakahara
Sorcerer
300 Crystals
At night, Sorcerers will begin casting a spell that, when charged, triggers a unique cutscene that damages all enemies in the level.
Defeat Raikobo
Ninja
300 Crystals
The Ninja acts on their own initiative, moving across the map and attacking enemies both at range and close-up as they feel fit.
Defeat Yatsukahagi
As you can see, there's quite a variety of Roles in there and not all of them will fit every stage. On top of that, some Roles, like the Sumo, are not only quite expensive but restricted to certain Villagers so you'll have to think tactically before choosing who you want to use in any given level.
Every Upgrade For Each Role
Every Role in Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess comes with its own upgrade tree featuring six nodes. Four of these are stat upgrades, while the remaining two are active abilities that the Role can use whenever that dramatically improves their utility and self-sufficiency.
Woodcutter
The Woodcutter is your bread-and-butter Role. They deal steady damage, attack fast, and can even chase down enemies. They're far from the strongest, though they cover a good selection and are a help in just about every level.

Archers can only be placed at higher elevations to keep them out of reach of enemies.

Pairing them with higher-damage units will let you take them down while the Sumo keeps them distracted.

With how situational they are, it's best to preserve them until you know you need one, rather than sacrificing a villager you may not use.

They cannot do any actions by themselves, either attacking or defending themselves, only chanting. Once they have completed their incantation, however, the attack they unleash will almost always defeat every enemy in the level.

Ninja
Unlike most other Roles in the game, the ninja does not follow commands. They act independently, jumping across the map to take down any enemies that others are not targeting. They have both ranged and melee capabilities as well, making them quite versatile.
They are, however, quite prone to dying quickly due to how often they jump right into the fray.
