Review
TheGamer's first look into Disney Dreamlight Valley wanted to hope for the best, but Stacey Henley had valid concerns about how the game would handle microtransactions and adding new characters going forward. Like many games that attempt to imitate Animal Crossing's iconic style, Disney Dreamlight Valley creates a comfortable setting with vibrant biomes to explore.
Dreamlight Valley has all the right parts, but hasn’t quite assembled them correctly. It’s basically Disney Animal Crossing, which is inarguably a brilliant idea. Disney has a bursting cast of characters it could incorporate into Dreamlight Valley, and the cutesy appeal of Animal Crossing is baked in.
Thankfully, it looks as though Gameloft hopes to add free content continuously. Though there are some characters that will be locked behind Expansion Passes (which add to the main story), no individual characters are sold. Outside the expansion pass, all characters are free to unlock and arrange in the village.
The concerns about microtransactions mainly apply to the Moonstone system, though this is a completely optional part of the game. Moonstones can be used to purchase cosmetic items for your tools, the villagers, and more, but are not required to play the game.
There are a couple of ways to earn moonstones for free in the game, though in small increments.
If you're a fan of Disney, you'll love getting to build what is essentially your own version of Toontown with iconic characters you know. You can also explore the world and unlock new secrets while befriending the villagers and seeing who they create new relationships with as well.
Time Expenditure
Disney Dreamlight Valley's main story is engaging, though somewhat short. You'll spend plenty of time befriending the villagers, completing quests, gathering resources, and decorating your village. Though some quests are time locked and will only progress after a certain period of time, the main story doesn't take all that long to complete.
Most of your time will be spent gardening, fishing, or mining to get resources, as well as talking to your favorite villagers and befriending them to earn new and unique rewards. The additional time comes from completing the character's side quests, decorating your village, and getting lost in the Touch Of Magic menu, where you can customize clothing and furniture with different motifs.

What Players Are Saying
A Magical, Engaging Sim Game - Haven Smith
Disney Dreamlight Valley not only shines as a celebration of Disney characters, but it's a very fun, cozy game with a lot of content for its lower price tag. The base game alone offers over a hundred hours of content between its main story, character storylines, and valley-decoration, and it continues to receive updates. Disney Dreamlight Valley also has one of the most expansive and diverse character creations available.
Hit Or Miss - Sharnelle Earle
I think the base game is worth it if you like this type of genre, especially when there are free updates and added items both from the free Star Path and seasonal events. I think the most the game has past Disney characters is decorating, so if you're not big on decorating, then you will quickly become bored. I'm personally tired of the quests, I don't care what characters have to say anymore, but maybe that's because I feel defeated that the game isn't going free-to-play and extra content is behind an expensive paywall.
The Perfect, Stress-Free Game For Disney Fans - Zoë J. Osik
I love getting to arrange my village, gather flowers, and learn about the secrets of the valley. At times, it feels like there's some grinding to be done, but there's no pressure. The leisurely atmosphere is comfortable and inviting, as the villagers are just happy to see you and won't rush you or make comments on long absences. The free content updates are engaging, and the Expansion Pass is worth the investment if you've gotten all you can out of the base game.
