  • Experienced gamers can limit lobbies to only include players on their platform to avoid newbies.
  • Single player mode in Sea of Thieves available, but can be more challenging than multiplayer servers for beginners.

Sea Of Thieves has sailed onto PS5, making video game history in a couple of ways. Not only because it's an Xbox-published game on its biggest rival's platform, but also because it's the first Rare game to ever be released on a PlayStation console. If you're one of the many to have been taking the PS5 version of Sea of Thieves for a spin and you're having the time of your life, great! If you've given it a try but other more experienced pirates are dampening the experience for you, there's a way to get rid of them until you're ready for something a little more intense.

How To Disable Crossplay In Sea Of Thieves

via Rare

It took years of pestering from those of us with friends who don't own the same console as we do to finally get PlayStation and Xbox to see eye-to-eye and let us play together. Now that we finally have that in a lot of games, including Sea of Thieves, it might feel a little hypocritical to be looking for a way to get rid of them. This is a rare instance of thousands of people being introduced to a game that others have been playing for years though, so playing with and against them feels like being thrown in the deep end, or in Sea of Thieves case being made to walk the plank.

If you're fed up with experienced Xbox and PC players being mean to you, disabling crossplay so only inexperienced PlayStation players are sailing the seven seas with you is a very simple process. After booting up the game, head to Sea of Thieves' settings. In the settings menu, you should find a matchmaking preferences option. There you should find options allowing you to select who you'd prefer to play Sea of Thieves with, including the option to limit your lobbies to PlayStation players with controllers.

Disabling Crossplay On Xbox And Sea Of Thieves' Single Player Mode

via Rare

Although the primary goal of this guide is to aid PlayStation players in finding somewhere they can hone their Sea of Thieves skills with fellow novices, the revelation that crossplay can be turned off is as much for Xbox and PC players as it is for newbies playing on PS5. If you have been playing Sea of Thieves for years and you're annoyed by the influx of new players, you too can tweak your matchmaking preferences. Switch it to only include players on the platform you're using if you'd prefer your Sea of Thieves lobbies to be saved for those who already know what they're doing.

If you'd rather there were no other real players at all while you're learning the Sea of Thieves ropes, or you just want to play alone, the game does have a single-player mode. The thing is, with no one there to help you and everything from NPC pirates to monsters that call the deep home awaiting you, Sea of Thieves' single-player mode can actually be a harder place to learn the game than its multiplayer servers.

Whatever you decide when it comes to crossplay options and playing with others, if you are new to Sea of Thieves and you're having trouble with its learning curve, stick with it. It's worth it and may well be the next live service game you get lost in.
