God Of War Creator David Jaffe Says Atreus Is A "Terrible Character"

Summary
- God of War creator David Jaffe has already made it clear in the past that he's not a big fan of the Norse games, particularly when it comes to Kratos' direction.
- It seems he's also not a big fan of Atreus, though, as he recently called him a "terrible character".
- Jaffe says that Ragnarok needed to make him a character people wanted to keep playing as, which is a goal that he doesn't think was achieved.
God of War creator David Jaffe has said that he thinks Atreus is a "terrible character at a visual level and a play level" and thinks he was no longer interesting after Ragnarok.
As beloved as the original God of War trilogy is, it's fair to say that its two most recent games, God of War and God of War Ragnarok, are generally more popular with fans due to their heavier focus on storytelling. The Norse Saga's new approach does have its critics, though, notably including the creator of the whole series, David Jaffe.

Characters don’t have to be frozen in time just because their creators are
PostsJaffe has gone on record several times now to note that he doesn't approve of how God of War and Ragnarok took the action-heavy series in a different direction, with some of his biggest complaints being aimed at Kratos' character arc. It seems that Jaffe doesn't just dislike Kratos' story in the Norse games, as he's recently called out Atreus for being a "terrible character".
God Of War Creator Calls Atreus A "Terrible Character"
As reported by FandomWire, Jaffe recently shared a video where he talked to Days Gone director John Garvin about the direction of the latest God of War games and how they handled Kratos. Jaffe has already made it clear in the past that he doesn't like his creation growing and changing, but the video also reveals that he really doesn't like Atreus.
Jaffe said that, while he likes Atreus being the son of Kratos, he thinks that he's a "terrible" character in terms of visuals and playstyle, and isn't someone to build a franchise around. He also said that Atreus needed to be set up to be someone the player wants to control by the end of Ragnarok, which is something he doesn't think was done well.
"And what you're left with is not a character to build a franchise around. And I also think that Atreus is a terrible character at a visual level and a play level. I like his function as a son for Kratos, but that guy needed to be set up by the end of Ragnarok or the middle of Ragnarok to be like 'f**k, that dude is cool, I want to be that guy' and Ragnarok didn't give us that."
As was the case when Jaffe revealed that he didn't like Kratos' direction and growth, his comments have already proven to be a bit controversial with fans, which doesn't come as a surprise considering how beloved Atreus is. Jaffe seems to know that's coming, though, as he even calls out the response to his previous comments and refutes the claims that he doesn't know how fiction works.
I don't know about you guys, but I'd absolutely love to see Atreus carry on the God of War series. Let's see him in his own game soon please, Sony Santa Monica.
