Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is shaping up to become the definitive version of one of Square Enix's most beloved games. The re-release is thematically timely, and according to its developers, it wouldn't exist without the fanbase.

Apparently, there's more on the way, but only if that fanbase shows up in droves for The Ivalice Chronicles. What form future Final Fantasy Tactics revisits might take is up in the air, but a full-blown sequel to the timeless original title is in the cards.

Ivalice Alliance Reborn?

Inverse recently spoke with Kazutoyo Maehiro, whose extensive history at Square includes helping to pen the stories of numerous Final Fantasy 14 expansions, serving as creative director and screenplay-writer of Final Fantasy 16, and - most importantly within this context! - aiding in the development of the original Final Fantasy Tactics and outright directing Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles.

The interview covers a broad range of subjects related to the upcoming remaster, but special attention has been drawn to Maehiro's tantalizing hints at a potential future for Final Fantasy's most treasured sub-series. The FFT "brand" has largely been dormant since 2008's underrated Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift, with brief sparks of middling life found in the short-lived Final Fantasy Tactics S mobile game. To say we've wanted more from the Ivalice universe is an exercise in understatement.

"If The Ivalice Chronicles can do well, that's good for the fans, they can enjoy it. But, at the same time, it shows the business viability of the strategy RPG genre. So that could potentially open the door for something with Final Fantasy Tactics Advance or A2, or maybe even sequels and new titles as well." -Kazutoyo Maehiro

Maehiro's statement about the Advance duology, of course, suggests the probability of remasters for those less serious-toned spinoffs. They certainly have their fans, and while I'm a bigger FFT mark, I still enjoy them. They each bring new dimensions to the isometric mechanics that Final Fantasy Tactics establishes.

It's that "sequels and new titles" part that's sure to turn more than a few heads. Final Fantasy Tactics 2 is the dream, isn't it? And Maehiro is pumped for the chance. "I think I speak for everyone who's worked on the original Final Fantasy Tactics, and is working on The Ivalice Chronicles as well - we'd really like to see that happen."

Arguably the single most hype-inducing thing of all about Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is that the legend himself, Yasumi Matsuno, is back at it with freelance contributions. Matsuno wrote and directed Final Fantasy Tactics (as well as Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy 12, two Ivalice-linked adventures), but he was notably absent from the making of FFT's previous remaster, The War of the Lions.

Maehiro sounds like he is, indeed, speaking on behalf of Matsuno. More Matsuno means more greatness if an FFTA2 gets the greenlight, which now sounds far likelier than it ever has before. We've just got to actually, you know, buy the game.
