Multiple references to Final Fantasy 9 appear to have been spotted in the Epic Games Store database, fueling rumors of an imminent remake announcement.
It is almost comical right now as to how open a secret the long-rumored Final Fantasy 9 remake is. After being leaked in the infamous Nvidia GeForce Now database fiasco back in 2021, various insiders have said the game is real and currently in development. Most recently, popular Twitter insider Midori has stated a couple of times that the game is coming, most recently having claimed it's "very far along in development."
Now it appears as Epic Games is pouring even more fuel on the already roaring fire, thanks to the recent launch of the Epic Store database, which functions similarly to SteamDB. First spotted by users on the Famiboards forum (thanks RPGSite), Epic appears to be showing off the codenames for all kinds of unannounced titles from big publishers, including the likes of Sega, Bethesda, and Sony.

Square Enix isn't immune to this either, as two interesting codenames have been spotted, those being "Skobeloff" and "Momo." We know that Skobeloff is Final Fantasy 16 - as it was announced last year the game would be getting a PC port - and this database entry has three pieces of DLC, a demo, and a literal cloud save destination of "Final Fantasy XVI" attached. Pretty nailed on.
Momo is more interesting though, as while the name Final Fantasy 9 can't be found, various references to the game can. On the Offers tab for Momo Production, you can find a listing for an "Early-Purchase Bonus Tetra Master Starter Pack" and "Pre Order Bonus Thief's Knives."
Final Fantasy 9 fans will know that Tetra Master is the name of the card game featured in the title, while main character Zidane is a thief that uses knives as his main weapon. You can also see a listing for a "Cuisine Set," which doesn't give all that much away, but combined with everything else, could be a reference to Quina Quen, the food-loving companion players first meet in Qu's Marsh.
Of course, take all of this with a pinch of salt, especially since the entries were last updated in mid 2023, but it seems almost certain this is Final Fantasy 9 being hidden away. We'll just have to keep waiting until Square Enix decides to show us what the damn thing is.
