Sometimes, the most memorable bosses in a game are those that aren't actually that important. They're incidental bosses, fought on the way to larger, more important villains. The Control Node, fought in Final Fantasy 16's Reverie stage, may be one of those bosses for you.

To begin with, this boss has an odd appearance, looking like an enlarged version of the Defense Nodes you've been fighting for the past few hours. In addition to that, though, it has a large range of tricky attacks to get used to, including a laser barrage worthy of a trance disco.

How To Beat The Control Node

Close

You'll face the Control Node during Reverie upon stepping onto a large elevator. On the positive side, this boss doesn't have a massive health bar and can be dealt with relatively quickly when compared to its beefier brethren.

On the other hand, it has some pretty devious attacks.

Attack

Description

Rolling Ball

After charging up a spinning attack and swinging backward, Control Node makes a dashing attack at you.

As long as you're aware that a dashing attack is coming when the boss backs up, you should be able to reliably dodge to the side just before it reaches you.

Static Shock

The Control Node opens and starts charging up an electrical attack. The air around it will crackle with electricity and turn blue before it sets off the explosion.

When this attack starts up, move out of the blast zone. If you're locked on, try turning the lock-on off to move quicker.

Sweeping Laser

A small gun protrudes from the Control Node before firing a laser forward in your direction. The boss will then sweep the laser in your direction.

There is an alternate version of this attack where the laser is swept up to the ceiling instead of horizontally.

Keep in mind that you'll have to dodge two parts of this attack and you'll be able to time your dodges easily.

Electro Balls

The Control Node opens and spits lots of electrical orbs out in a wide arc in front of it.

This attack doesn't have much range but does cover a wide area. Try to get around to the boss's side to get some easy damage in.

Short Circuit

The Control Node heads to the center of the elevator and fires a single, persistent beam at you. This beam will track you for the duration of the attack. In addition to the initial beam, the Control node fires out many other beams in various directions, making the battlefield far more dangerous to move around.

To avoid this attack reliably, dodge through the initial beam and keep moving in one direction. Dodge through any incidental beams you'd otherwise have to run through.

Clamp

The Control Node flies to your location and tries to slam its halves together, catching you in the middle.

Dodge away from the final part of this attack as the two halves slam together.

Slamming Attack

While the Control Node is in its charging phase (see below), it will slam down into the ground from time to time, creating a large shock in a radius around it.

Dodge through this attack instead of trying to get away from it - you can't afford to stop attacking.

The Control Node has a surprisingly varied moveset for what is essentially an angry orb. Try to stay close to the boss as possible throughoutthe fight, as this will give you a better chance of avoiding its laser attacks, though be very wary of its Static Shock.

Once you've damaged the boss enough, it will start charging up its ultimate attack. As with other examples of this in the game, you'll need to deplete the purple bar that replaces the health bar before a countdown elapses. This shouldn't prove too difficult, though, as the boss will only use an easily-spotted Slamming Attack during this period.

Once you've gotten used to this boss's moveset, you shouldn't have too much trouble whittling down its health bar. Just stay wary - the next boss fight will begin immediately after winning this one, so you'll want to make sure you're as healthy as you can be going into it.

How To Beat Terminus

Close

Terminus, a Notorious Mark hunt located in Sanbreque, is a stronger version of the Control Node.

The differences you can expect to face with Terminus are listed in the table below:

Attack

Description

Clamp

This attack is now used three times in quick succession.

Electro Balls

This attack now has better range and tracking.

Hypersurge

Terminus will use the Control Node's Slamming Attack three times in quick succession.

In addition to the upgraded moveset as described above, the Terminus is also generally a more aggressive foe and will prove a far bigger challenge. As long as you quickly reacquaint yourself with the moveset and make adjustments for the upgraded attacks, you should come out of the battle fine.

One particular behavior that we noticed is that Terminus will very often follow its triple Clamp attack very quickly with a Static Shock. Make sure you're ready to dodge out of the attack radius.

For beating Terminus, you'll get the following rewards:

Experience

3,200

Ability Points

85

Gil

9,800

Renown

35

Spoils

Meteorite x2
