Summary

  • Obsidian is reportedly reluctant to commit to another Fallout game.
  • This is due to the size of the project, with Obsidian now sticking with smaller-scale RPGs.
  • However, Bethesda's Todd Howard says there are "conversations" about getting another developer involved.

Obsidian is "unlikely" to develop the next Fallout, as it instead focuses on its smaller RPGs, like The Outer Worlds and Avowed.

This comes from Startmenu editor-in-chief Lex Luddy, who made this claim on yesterday's Giant Bomb podcast. Here, Luddy backs up podcast host Jeff Grubb's claims that there were "discussions" about getting Obsidian on another Fallout game. However, she adds that the studio was reluctant, as it now wants to "back away" from larger-scale projects.

Obsidian Reportedly Not Working On Another Fallout

"I can say that the discussion [Grubb] brought up years ago of Obsidian [being] approached about Fallout: New Vegas 2, that did happen," says Luddy. "I also know that it wasn't just Bethesda being like, 'Hey, we don't want someone else making this game'. It was also partly Obsidian going, 'That would be a huge scale for us that we have backed away from'."

She adds, "There is currently no Fallout in development [...] It is very unlikely that Obsidian are going to be the people to make the next Fallout."

Obsidian was founded by former Black Isle Studios employees - the company that worked on the original Fallout games.

Publicly, Obsidian has occasionally expressed an interest in one day returning to the series. In 2023, studio head Feargus Urquhart said that he would "love to make another Fallout" before retiring, but confirmed that there were no plans at the time. He also said the team was "pretty full with Avowed, Grounded and Outer Worlds 2", something that hasn't changed since.

Still, it's no secret that the community would love another Obsidian-developed Fallout game. Fallout: New Vegas is often cited as a fan favourite, and as we've seen since the TV show dropped, still has a healthy playerbase. So much so that there were queues to play New Vegas on PlayStation 5, since it can only be accessed via cloud gaming. We've also seen a huge spike in mods being downloaded for New Vegas, with the playerbase still creating new add-ons for the almost 14-year-old game.

But even if Obsidian doesn't get to take the reigns on the next Fallout game, it's likely that someone else will. Xbox is reportedly looking into ways to ship a new Fallout title "sooner rather than later", which is at odds with Bethesda's plan to hold off on Fallout 5 until after The Elder Scrolls 6 launches. Todd Howard has also said that there are "conversations" about getting another team involved with the series, so Bethesda seems to be aware that there has to be another Fallout game before Fallout 5.
