We all remember how traumatizing the beginning of Elden Ring was. No, not the Chapel of Anticipation, and the Grafted Scion that's claimed more lives than we can count, but being called maidenless by the quirky NPC, White Mask Varré. One other thing that we might all remember that is not as negative, is his handsome mask, which can be obtained with a little bit of work,

Before we get into the details of how to get this the White Mask, along with its special, War Surgeon Armor Set, it should be noted that this cannot be done if you’ve defeated Mohg, Lord of Blood, beforehand. If you’re the unfortunate soul that has defeated him already, remember to come back here once you’ve started your New Game+.

Updated July 4, 2024, by Andrew Scariati: If you've been looking for how to get Varre's Mask to complete your perfect Elden Ring bleed build, then look no further. Much like the White Mask, Elden Ring hides things from view, so you'll need to do a little digging to get this armor.

Where To Find The White Mask

To get the White Mask helmet, you will need to defeat an invader known as the Nameless White Mask.

To reach his location, you will need to travel to the infamous Mohgwyn Palace, which is known to be an incredibly hard location to get to.

The closest Site of Grace that you should fast-travel to, if you’ve discovered it, is the Palace Approach Ledge-Road.

If you haven’t made it to that Site of Grace, fast-travel to the Dynasty Mausoleum Entrance and travel by following the wall to the right. You can easily avoid enemies by doing this.

If you're not sure how to get to Mohgwyn Palace, there's a quick way to do so.

Progress White Mask Varre's Quest

Once you've defeated one of the Shardbearer bosses (any boss with a Great Rune), White Mask Varré will move to the Rose Church in southwest Liurnia of the Lakes.

Speak to Varre and exhaust his dialogue to receive some Festering Bloody Fingeritems.

Advance the quest by doing one of the following:

  1. Invade three players with the item Varre gave you. You do not need to kill the host.
  2. Defeat the NPC invader Magnus The Beast Claw in Writheblood Ruins.

Invading players will be much easier since you can just sever your connection with the host after you invade to make progress.

From here, you'll receive the Lord of Blood's Favor item, which you'll need to soak in the blood of a maiden to progress.

There are a handful of options, but the simplest is to go to the Church of Inhibition near the Frenzied Flame Village to get the blood quickly.

Return to Varre and exhaust his dialogue to receive the item you need: the Pureblood Knight's Medal.

Ignore Varre's warning and use the Pureblood Knight's Medal to be transported to Mohgwyn Palace.

Once you’re at the Palace Approach Ledge-Road, ride down to the west where you can see the Giant Crow, and pass it by or defeat it to advance.

After you’re through, get to the Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum area, where a Nameless White Mask is going to invade you.

Make sure you’re at the exact location marked on the map above, as there are three Nameless White Masks that can invade you, and the other two don’t drop any items.

How To Defeat The Nameless White Mask

The Nameless White Mask is a pretty powerful opponent if you are under-leveled.

For this region in general, a minimum level of 90 is recommended for you to be able to defeat enemies without slamming your head into your desk due to rage-inducing health bars.

His attacks induce heavy Bleed, so try to keep your distance and make sure to constantly dodge his attacks. Another important fact is that his health is around the 4000 mark.

Once he is defeated, he will drop the White Mask helmet, which you’ve been looking for,and the War Surgeon Set:

  1. War Surgeon Gown
  2. War Surgeon Gloves
  3. War Surgeon Trousers

If you’re going for a lightweight build, these will be useful.

Why Is The White Mask Good?

If you’re wondering if all this work to get Elden Ring's White Mask is worth it, know that this amazing helmet will give you a ten percent buff to attack power after inflicting Bleed on an enemy.

This is extremely powerful for a Bleed build that inflicts it after two to three hits, so, if that is what you’re looking for, this helmet will probably become one of your favorites.

This helmet pairs exceptionally well with any Bleed weapon and is even better with the Lord of Blood's Exultation and Mohgwyn's Sacred Spear, which synergize to form a strong set.
