Elden Ring Wins Game Of The Year At The Game Awards 2022

Ten months after it launched, and in the same week that it finally got some DLC, Elden Ring has officially been named Game of the Year at The Game Awards. Something many of the more than 12 million of you who have played it considered a foregone conclusion for the majority of the past 12 months. FromSoftware's latest Souls game beat nominees such as Stray and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 to take home the trophy, but honestly, the result of this one was never really in much doubt.
Well, actually, that's not technically true. While Horizon Forbidden West and Plague Tell Requiem were never likely to stop Elden Ring from winning the big one, the winner's one real rival emerged as FromSoftware rounded the final bend with The Game Awards in sight. God Of War Ragnarok launched in November, posing the one true threat to Elden Ring's crown. Getting in just under the wire in order to be considered, Kratos stood a real chance of spoiling the party.

That didn't happen, but it doesn't mean Ragnarok and Elden Ring's battle is over just yet. While the game that The Game Awards names Game of the Year is the one the industry and its players tend to recognize most, there are a lot more official awards to be given out. Elden Ring is actually a ways ahead in that regard too, now holding 19 Game of the Year awards compared to Ragnarok's four.
As touched upon above, Elden Ring players have a lot more to be excited about this week than winning an award. Months after dataminers discovered a colosseum hidden in The Lands Between, Elden Ring got DLC centered around that very building. While it could have quite easily been a Game Awards reveal, FromSoftware decided to drop it a few days early, and with barely any notice.
While Ragnarok is great and probably would have been named Game of the Year in almost any other 12-month period, it's hard to argue Elden Ring doesn't deserve it. Between its expansive map, incredible bosses, and the amazing things its community has done with the game since launch, Elden Ring will be a Game of the Year worthy of that title for a very long time.
