Alan Wake 2 is one of those games filled with incredible moments that make you want to play it over and over again, though not everyone likes the idea of going back to an underpowered state and losing all of their upgrades. Thankfully, developer Remedy Entertainment has us covered, as it has seemingly announced that Alan Wake 2 will be getting a New Game Plus mode in the near future.
The feature was teased on Friday via the official Alan Wake 2 Twitter account, which posted an image of Alan in the Dark Place shining a flashlight on a wall with the words "New Game +" edited onto it. Alongside the image, the tweet came with the caption "New month, new game... plus?", which suggests that Remedy plans to drop the feature within the next month.
That's all the info that Remedy has to share at the moment, which is fittingly cryptic given the game we're talking about here. However, we can assume that weapon and Words of Power upgrades will carry over into a new playthrough, just like with most other New Game Plus modes we've seen in recent years. The real question is whether Remedy will take the opportunity to do something a little bit unique with it.
To be honest, just the idea of getting to go through the musical section again already has me itching to dive into New Game Plus right now.
A New Game Plus mode fits extremely well with the themes of Alan Wake 2, which has a story that revolves around the concept of spirals and loops. We've seen a few games this year attempt to do bold and unique things with their New Game Plus modes, such as Dead Space with its alternate ending and Starfield's unique suit, spaceship, and that other thing I wouldn't dare spoil for all of you who haven't got around to playing it yet.
Whether or not Remedy decides to do something unique with its New Game Plus mode too remains to be seen, though it would be a pretty big missed opportunity if they didn't sneak some kind of minor story detail or a new jumpscare or two.
For now, we will have to wait patiently for the release date announcement, which could come during The Game Awards next week. Alan Wake 2 itself has been nominated a whopping eight times across a variety of awards, with only Baldur's Gate 3 managing to rack up the same number of nominations. Remedy will be hoping that Alan has impressed enough to win at least one of those awards, which he deserves after spending 13 years in the Dark Place.
