Summary

  • The Veilguard won't have a quest like Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts, meaning no Winter Palace balls.
  • The game's director says this is because Rook's challenges are "more immediate and visceral", not leaving much time for a party.
  • The politics of Thedas will still play a role in the story, however.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard won't have a quest like Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts, so don't expect to be attending any balls this time around. This comes from The Veilguard's creative director John Epler, who says that our new hero, Rook, won't have time to swing by a party at the Winter Palace.

Epler confirmed this in a Q&A with fans over on the BioWare Discord. Here, Epler sheds some more light on what we can expect from The Veilguard, revealing that the fan-favourite quest from Dragon Age: Inquisition isn't going to return.

Don't Expect Any Winter Palace Balls In Dragon Age: The Veilguard

"There's not going to be a quest quite like the Halamshiral ball," says Epler. "That was very specific to the Inquisitor. The Inquisitor was trying to gain favour with a bunch of different factions. They were trying to form an army. Rook's struggle and Rook's challenges are much more immediate and visceral."

However, that doesn't mean The Veilguard is ignoring the politics of Thedas. "It wouldn't be Dragon Age if there [wasn't] politics," says Epler. "You'll have influence on things that are happening, the fate of nations.

"Across this adventure, Rook does become a fairly important figure", he continues. "It's natural that you'll have some influence and some involvement with the affairs of the different factions and nations."

So, even if we won't be gatecrashing any Orlesian parties, the politics of Thedas will come into play. It'll be interesting to see how that pans out, especially when the leaders of Ferelden and Orlais are dependent on player actions - there are a lot of world states to take into account now, and there's no "canon" storyline to follow. However, there are plenty of other countries to explore, so the devs have plenty to work with there.

We'll find out what the team is cooking soon enough though. Dragon Age: The Veilguard is set to launch on October 31, and will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
