Summary

  • Dragon Age: The Veilguard has a pretty decent character creator this time around, which was apparently made possible thanks to The Sims.
  • Director Corrnise Busch revealed that The Sims 4 was often a point of reference when trying to make sure The Veilguard's character creator was inclusive and representative.
  • Busch also says that BioWare was able to "draw from that prior experience" of The Sims developer Maxis.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard differs slightly from the other games in the series in that it's got a pretty good character creator this time around. BioWare appears to have taken the criticism of Dragon Age: Inquisition's character creator to heart, and will allow players to customize almost every aspect of their character in The Veilguard.

As a result, a tremendous amount of work has gone into the game's character creator, making sure that players from all walks of life can feel represented when making their characters, and one way that BioWare managed to do this was to use a character creator from another of publisher Electronic Arts' long-running series - The Sims.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard's Character Creator Was Strongly Inspired By The Sims 4

Being a series that revolves around imitating life, The Sims has developed a very complex and intricate character creator over the years. Speaking with IGN, Dragon Age: The Veilguard director Corinne Busche revealed that The Sims played a large part in making sure that everyone feels represented by The Veilguard's character creator, and was a point of reference whenever the team struggled.

"Character creators are extremely complex, and in many ways even more personal. It’s so important that players feel they can be represented and feel pride in that representation as they go through the creation process," says Busche. "In particular, I remember we were struggling with some of our iconography, and we turned to each other and said ‘how did The Sims 4 handle this?.'"

Busche goes on to explain that BioWare also learned a lot from The Sims developer Maxis about representing gender and identity in a game, as well as localization issues that come from releasing a game in a number of different countries with different languages. She explains that BioWare was able to "draw from that prior experience" when making The Veilguard, and that the studio will now be able to "pay that forward" to other studios.
