It's been a long time since we've been able to step into the blood-soaked boots of the Doom Slayer, but ripping and tearing finally returns in just a few weeks with Doom: The Dark Ages. From what we've seen of the game so far, it looks like a surprisingly different take on Doom than 2016 and Eternal, with more emphasis placed on story and some big changes made to combat.

Doom: The Dark Ages will present a Sliders feature that lets you adjust the difficulty to your liking. I think this is a big deal, and for the better.

Although early impressions of The Dark Ages' sweeping changes have been a little mixed so far, it seems that id Software is very confident in the final product. In a recent video highlighting a new area called the Cosmic Realm, game director Hugo Martin revealed some new details about the game and even had a very big claim that I'm sure Doom fans won't argue about.

id Thinks Doom: The Dark Ages Is Its Best Game Yet

It's Certainly The Biggest Doom, At Least

As originally pointed out by GamesRadar+, the reveal trailer for the Cosmic Realm features game director Hugo Martin introducing the new area and talking a little bit about what it brings to the game. In fact, Martin opens up with a pretty big claim, noting that he thinks Doom: The Dark Ages is "the best Doom game we've ever made".

Of course, Martin isn't going to say that it's "just okay" or anything, but it does show how much confidence and excitement there is about The Dark Ages over at id Software. While praising the Dark Ages, Martin also points out that the game will have 22 levels, which is a big increase from 2016 and Eternal.

I think this is the best Doom game we've ever made. We gave this everything we had. We left no feature unpolished. - Hugo Martin

Both of those games had 13 levels each, so The Dark Ages is close to doubling that. Eternal was considered a little long, so here's hoping that the levels are more evenly paced, something that seems to be the case considering the more varied mech and dragon levels. We'll know for sure how Doom: The Dark Ages stacks up when it launches in just a few weeks on May 15.
