Summary

  • Death Note received two new trademarks in the EU, leading many to believe that one of them is related to a video game.
  • Given the state of anime video games, fans were immediately unhappy and joked that it would be an arena fighter.
  • It's important to note that the trademark could be in reference to Netflix's planned live-action series.

There is no shortage of anime and manga that would make for great video games. For example, Berserk would make for a killer FromSoftware game, and Mobile Suit Gundam would feel right at home within the Titanfall universe. That said, a vast majority of anime video games end up as fighting games, specifically 3D arena fighters. They're not bad per se, but they are a dime a dozen, and once you've played one, then you've experienced all there is to know.

Of course, occasionally, there's an anime video game that tries to break the mold. One Piece Odyssey, for example, was a turn-based RPG, while Digimon Survive was part visual novel, part tactics game. Now, it appears that the popular anime and manga series Death Note will be entering the anime video game fold. What that game will look like remains to be seen, but snarky fans already have a few ideas, and they're not happy.

New EU Trademark Suggests That Death Note Game Could Be Coming

As first spotted by a user on eXputer, Shueisha Inc., the Japanese publishing company behind Weekly Shōnen Jump and other manga magazines, filed two new trademarks in the EU related to Death Note. The first trademark is simply titled "Death Note," while the second is for something called "Death Note Killer Within." Both trademarks filed have goods and services designations, making them resemble other trademarked anime games.

It's important to note, though, that those trademarks could refer to Netflix's planned live-action series. That said, it wouldn't be the first Death Note game, either. That's because there were three separate Nintendo DS titles released. More so, characters from Death Note have appeared in Jump crossover games, including prominent roles in 2019's Jump Force.

Either way, fans were quick to poke fun at the potential for a Death Note game, especially considering the landscape of anime video games as a whole. One user wrote on Reddit, "Somehow, it will be an anime arena fighter." That comment was followed up with a gameplay suggestion, with one user chiming in "Who can write the other person's name down the fastest."

Elsewhere, a user immediately requested potato chip-based DLC. That is in reference to Death Note's infamous potato chip scene, which has since become a major meme. If you haven't seen it, then check it out:

Memes aside, it'll be interesting to see if the Death Note game becomes a reality, and how it will play. That's because Death Note is a rare title that could work as a straight visual novel, something like Ace Attorney, or even a dreaded fighting game, as hard as that is to believe. Long live the potato chip DLC.
