As a survivor, you must be aware of your build and adjust your tactics accordingly to give yourself and your fellow players the best chances of escaping. Sure, getting away from the killer can be daunting at times. Though, rest assured that self-awareness and the right strategies will be your best bet for opening the exit gates and surviving the round.
10 Running Away In A Straight Line
One of the most detrimental mistakes that new survivors tend to make is trying to escape the killer by running away in a straight line. This will make it very easy for them to reach and hit you. Always try to lose the killer in areas that contain pallets or other obstacles, that prevent you from running in a linear path.
You can loop the killer (run around objects) which makes it very difficult for them to take a shot at you. This is not only a great strategy that can buy you and your team time, but it’s also hilarious.
9 Being Too Noisy
Don’t ignore the killer's heartbeat when fixing a generator. It’s a good idea to stop and escape the vicinity immediately. Being aware of your surroundings is highly important, as you will not hear the heartbeat of some killers at all.
During a chase, making a quick stop before vaulting through a window will prevent a loud sound notice for the killer. When using the perk Quick and Quiet, window and palette vaulting noises will be suppressed, which is perfect for these intense moments. Find a safe space away from the killer to perform other actions that make sounds, like healing teammates or cleansing totems.
When hit, the perk Iron Will will greatly reduce grunting noises which can also help you make a successful escape!
8 Misuse Of Pallets
You already know running towards areas that have numerous obstacles, such as pallets and buildings, is the best way to escape the killer. Although pulling down every single pallet you come across isn’t a great idea either. Make sure you have a good sight on the killer when pulling a pallet down. Otherwise, you will be wasting the few precious objects that can stun the killer and buy you time.
It’s important to remember pallets can also be used to free your teammates from the killer's grasp. When the killer is carrying your teammate and walks through a pallet, take advantage of the situation to save your friend.
7 Not Helping Teammates With Generators
It’s fine to roam around the map to find tools that can benefit you in the game - but don’t take too long. Your teammates will be working on generators to escape as quickly as possible. Not helping them with this significant task will prolong the match and complicate things.

If you come across a teammate already working on a generator, you should hop in and assist them. Two people fixing a generator will get the job done faster, which is essential to winning the game.
6 Misusing The Flashlight
Finding the perfect moment to shine the flashlight at the killer's face - to only completely miss and fail to save your friend is a common experience among survivors. When going in for a save, you want to position yourself in a good spot in front of the killer and aim your flashlight at their face before turning the light on.
It may take a while to get the hang of it, but once you do, it will be a highly effective tactic to free your fellow teammates. They will seriously thank you!
5 Not Fixing A Damaged Generator
You may witness the killer damage a generator they come across. When the coast is clear, fix the generator as soon as you can. Failure in doing so will put all that work to waste and cost you more time.
In some cases, you won’t be able to finish fixing the generator, but taking a second to at least stop the regression process will be a smart thing to do as it will spare you precious time. You or your teammates can come back to this one later on in the game.
4 Not Using Your Perks Effectively
There are many perks to choose from as a survivor. As a beginner, it can be daunting to figure out which ones you will use and enjoy the most. Make sure you know which ones you have equipped beforehand, to effectively utilize them throughout the match.

Not taking advantage of your perks is not only detrimental to you but also to the entire team. There are many team-based perks, like Botany Knowledge or Borrowed Time, that can greatly benefit survivors, so use them- and use them wisely.
3 Opening Exit Gates Too Soon
It's exciting to know when the exit gates are accessible, but opening the gates immediately is not the wise thing to do. You want to make sure your teammates are safe or close in range to the exit gates to open them completely. Opening them beforehand will set a time limit, potentially scuppering any rescue plans you set.
The killer perk “Bloodwarden” also rewards killers for opened exit gates. If a survivor is hooked during this period of time, the exit will be blocked temporarily, trapping all survivors for 30-60 seconds (depending on tier level). Making it possible to lose your life in this short but risky amount of time.
2 Rescuing Survivors Too Fast (Or Too Slow)
The Dredge moring a survivor during a game of Dead by DaylightYou have definitely experienced this one before, having a teammate save you to only be hit and hooked once more. Try not to do this to your fellow survivors, it's extremely important to unhook them at the appropriate time. Being patient, and waiting for the killer to leave the vicinity is key to making a successful rescue.
On the other hand, you don’t want to be too slow either! Sometimes you want to take a break from fixing that generator to save a hooked survivor. Balance is key so make sure you assess the situation.
1 Being Selfish
There is nothing more disheartening than realizing none of your teammates will rescue you from the entity. This is especially the case when there is more than one player, or if they are unscathed for the most part.
Aside from certain situations, such as a camping killer, always attempt to rescue your friends from the hook as it will reward you both quite nicely. Your friend will have another chance at life, and you will earn precious bloodpoints for doing so. Try and give it a shot!
