Dungeons & Dragons is an amazing tabletop RPG that has brought joy, frustration, and several interesting anecdotes for generations of gamers since the '70s. D&D lets you create your character from the ground up, and it's more than just deciding their race, class, and other features. You also decide what makes them the person (or creature) they are at their core.

As a DM, you probably want your encounters to be challenging but not impossible. Here are some tips to ensure they're balanced.
PostsHow their story ends is all in your hands — and the schemes of the Dungeon Master. With the right people, D&D can be an amazing experience, but sometimes it's hard to get a session going for various reasons. But fear not, for there are plenty of games to play for those moments when you just can't get the gang together.
Updated on March 27, 2025, by Zackary Wiggs: Dungeons & Dragons doesn't have to be played in a tabletop and analog format. There are a handful of video games that take directly from D&D, whether it be in universe and lore, or just the dice-based playstyle. Even beyond that, there are more and more games released monthly that bring to consoles and PCs the in-depth fantasy worlds, the group-based action, and the epic quests that you can find in your typical D&D game. Recently, these include games where you can rule your own medieval lineage, and epic quests through the stars with your teammates.

SUBSCRIPTIONThe Lord of the Rings universe has been a go-to for fantasy fans all over the world. While there have been a few tries at making games based on Tolkien's ideas, not many have done as well as Middle Earth: Shadow of War.
The direct sequel to Shadow of Mordor, you don't have to have played the first game to appreciate this one, or be a big LotR fan at all. All you need to know is the ranger Talion has been possessed by the maker of the rings of power with the idea of stopping the uruk army and Sauron.
What follows is a fantasy adventure all about saving people, growing your supernatural powers, and hundreds of uruk to take on. Its nemesis system is something that revolutionized how players approached challenging enemies.

DIGITALBuilding off the story of the first game, Destiny 2 sees earth under attack and your guardians are the only one who can save the day. It's a bit of the chosen one trope that D&D fans love, but played off in a way that feels more organic.
Fighting off aliens and monsters ruled by darkness never gets old as you have plenty of options to upgrade your gear and weaponry. Not to mention, the game has plenty of options for solo or multiplayer play, but it definitely shines with friends.
Despite it being a sci-fi adventure, you can see the classes in Destiny 2 draw heavily from some of the D&D classes.

DIGITALBringing classic FromSoftware gameplay to feudal Japan, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice sees a lone shinobi, Wolf, seek revenge. You must take on formidable bosses along the way, using all your skills to survive and conquer.
Platform(s) PS4, PC, Xbox One OpenCritic Rating Mighty Powered by Expand CollapseOne of the tougher games out there, even in the Soulslike sub-genre, Sekiro is a revenge tale you don't get to see too often. Quick reaction times and an eye for tactics will take you a long way in this game.
The storyline is superb, albeit with a lot of fighting in between the bits of lore you get. Mix that with a world rife with eastern influences and some cool character designs, and you have a lot to be enthralled with. It's a great choice if you want some ideas for your next D&D campaign or character to break away from more typical European or Western fantasy mainstays.

Yharnam is a moonlit gothic city full of monsters corrupted by a dark disease that's transferred through blood. You, as a hunter of these monsters, must unravel the secrets of the city, if you can survive anyway.

SUBSCRIPTIONThe Old World of Warhammer is a great setting for D&D fans to get into. It has many of the mainstay fantasy tropes that you would come to expect, plus some new ideas thrown in, and few games flesh-out the world like Vermintide 2.
You and your three companions must go through various levels to save the Empire of Man from an army of ratmen and chaos barbarians. Shooting magic fire, wielding two-handed axes, or just shooting enemies with your flintlock are all great choices. There is a reason Warhammer has been such a long-standing fantasy universe.

DIGITALSometimes the best way to appreciate D&D is to look at actual historical settings, and few games do that as well in the modern age as Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. It's part RPG and part medieval simulator, but all a compelling story.
As the protagonist, Henry, you can hunt, fight, romance, and make a name for yourself through a well-made 15th century European world. There are plenty of adventures to be had, but plenty of setbacks too. It lacks the magic and monsters, but it is still well-worth your time for the depth and atmosphere that it gives such a forgotten age.

DIGITALRPGs are a fan favorite for the fantasy genre, and few do RPGs quite like FromSoftware. Elden Ring brought new life and new challenges to the concept with the adventures of the Tarnished in The Lands Between.
If you miss the grind of your weekly D&D session, Elden Ring is the next best thing, with plenty of bosses to fight and places to explore. It's amazing how powerful you feel going back to Limgrave after you've bested some of the best fighters in the game, just like the power that level 20 gives you.
Elden Ring is also arguably the most accessible of FromSoftware's fantasy games due to its open world and open-ended game design.

The post-apocalypse may not be the go-to setting for a game to resemble D&D, but the Wasteland games take the concept and make something new of it. The variety of characters that you can both make and meet lead the charge in this series.
They're an odd sort, but what would you expect from the apocalypse? Combine that with some great moral choices, strenuous quests, and some stellar turn-based combat, and you may find that it has more in common than not.

DIGITALThe Dragon Age series has been taking players to Thedas time and again. There, fantasy genre staples mix with whole new ideas to make the world live and breathe. There are few games that take it to the level that Veilguard does.
The typical D&D quest of saving the world is set up from the previous game, and a Rook of your choosing is ready to take the fight against the dark gods. But, not alone, thanks to a great adventuring party, the likes of which may remind you of some of your own characters.
