Summary

  • Cities: Skylines 2's first Detailer's Patch is adding content, including new features and vehicles.
  • While not outright stated, this appears to be Colossal Order fulfilling its promise to focus on free updates and patches to regain trust after the game's rocky launch.

Cities: Skylines 2 publisher Paradox Interactive hasn't had the best time since launch, having been dragged over the coals by fans for missing features and shoddy performance. In true Paradox fashion, the publisher reckoned it could satisfy some of the dissenters with a bunch of DLC, though this only managed to frustrate players even more due to it being rushed.

Cities: Skylines 2 developer Colossal Order later admitted earlier this year that it pushed out DLC too early to try and make up for the rocky launch, and promised fans that it would begin focusing on free updates and patches to try and win back trust. Thankfully, it seems as though Colossal is making good on that promise, as the game's first "Detailer's Patch" is adding a bunch of new content for free.

Cities: Skylines 2's Latest Patch Includes Free Vehicles And Buildings

With how much Paradox loves its DLC, this amount of content feels pretty substantial. With the amount of new assets being used and the variety on display, it's surprising it wasn't put behind a paywall. this feels like Colossal finally delivering on its promise to improve the base game before charging for additional content, and the fact that this is only the first patch the studio has been working on suggests the game is back on the right track.

We don't know when the next patch is dropping, but Colossal does mention it will be out of office for the rest of July for a summer break. That means we'll likely get another update at some point in August, so here's hoping that the studio carries on its good work and gets Cities: Skylines 2 to the quality it needs to be at.
