Castlevania Fans Aren’t Happy With Dead By Daylight’s Plot Teases

Summary
- Dead by Daylight continues its trend of crossovers, with Castlevania being the most recent collaboration.
- The in-game description for Count Dracula references the mythical Battle of 1999, a legendary event in the psyche of Castlevania fans.
- The Battle of 1999 has never actually appeared in a Castlevania game, despite numerous references to it.
Dead by Daylight is known for its crossovers, having previously included characters from Tomb Raider, Alan Wake, Dungeons & Dragons and more in its various multiplayer modes. The latest crossover from developer Behaviour Interactive is with Castlevania, Konami's legendary gothic series.
To say Castlevania fans are starving would be an understatement. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 was released over a decade ago, and the reception was middling. This hasn't stopped Konami from lending Castlevania to other titles, such as V-Rising and now, Dead by Daylight.
The Castlevania crossover adds Count Dracula, arguably the strongest character in the entire Castlevania series, and Trevor Belmont, the first person to have ever defeated the Count. It makes sense that these two natural enemies were chosen to represent the Castlevania series.
A Near-Mythical Battle, That We've Never Seen
It's not enviable for Castlevania fans to receive new content through crossovers with no news of a new Castlevania game on the horizon. There's a certain passage in Dracula's description in Dead by Daylight that has irked sections of the Castlevania fandom.
"In the savage clash known as the Battle of 1999, Julius Belmont took the fight to Dracula's Castle and battled the Dark Lord with the same enchanted whip his distant ancestors wielded…" reads the description. For those unaware, the Battle of 1999 also known as the Demon Castle War is a near-mythical event in the Castlevania lore, a legendary battle that destroyed Dracula once and for all.
Here's the thing, though. We've never actually seen the Battle of 1999 in a video game. Konami has teased it numerous times, and it has become a sort of white whale for the community. Having it referenced in a crossover event could feel like Konami rubbing salt in the wounds of desperate Castlevania fans.
The Battle of 1999 was first referenced in Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow and then again in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin.
"Haha wow, at this point the battle of 1999 is so mythical to me I don't think I want to see it attempted outside of a fan game," one replier to a tweet on the subject writes. "We are never getting the Demon Castle War game," another concurs.
"Castlevania fans have it worse than any other dead franchise," a quote post reads. "Like yeah ok the series you like isn't getting new games. That's not what's happening here though. Our series died before it got its proper ending and yet they keep referencing the finale game that does not exist."
Dead by Daylight: Castlevania is currently active and available to play.
