RelatedBaldur's Gate 3: Who Is Lae'zel?
An abrasive personality and a strong class make Lae'zel one of the most compelling companions in Baldur's Gate 3.
PostsSome might think he’s more a gameplay mechanic than a real character, since most players only talk to him when they want to change their class, or when they require the services of a hireling. But he does have some involvement in the plot, going as far as having the final cutscene of the game dedicated to him.
Spoiler Warning!
Who Is Withers?
While the game doesn’t give a definitive answer, there are plenty of clues scattered about.
Considering the crypt you find him in, the subtle references in his dialogue, and the fact that he talks about the Dead Three as if he knew them personally, Withers has to be Jergal, the Lord at the End of Everything.
Jergal was the God of Death before the arrival of the Dark Three to his Castle of Bone. He was one of the most powerful gods in existence, but grew bored with his responsibilities.
So, when the opportunity arose to give those duties to someone else, Jergal seized the chance.
Why Is Withers Helping Us?
While he gave his post as God of Death willingly, Jergal is known for following his successor around, either to offer advice or foil their most malevolent plans.
This is mostly to keep their godly neutrality in check, since the Dead Three are known for wanting to tip the scales in their favor.
That’s why he’ll use his mastery over death to aid you in your journey, reviving the key components of your party, so you can stop the godly trio in their newest plan.
But, even if he can revive other people, he won’t do so. He just wants you to stop his successors, so if any of your companion’s loved ones die, don’t go to Withers to get an easy way out.
