Torches will likely be the most common source of light you encounter, and they come in handy in a pinch. There are a few things to be aware of when using a Torch, but they pose a viable option for any party looking to explore freely with a portable light source, especially in the Shadow-Cursed Lands in early Act 2.

How To Use Torches

Torches are melee weapons, so to use one, just equip it in your weapon slot. However, a torch cannot be dual-wielded, so if you are holding a torch, you cannot hold another weapon, and any melee weapon attack you make will be with the torch, so you can hold a shield and a torch.

A torch should automatically be lit when you equip it. If it goes out, simply re-equip your torch to light it again, or dip it into a burning surface, such as a brazier.

Because torches function as melee weapons, if you switch to ranged weapons in combat, you will put the torch away and lose the light it grants you. You could keep your torch on a party member who doesn't use weapons, such as a spell caster, to avoid suddenly losing your light.

Alternatives To Torches

If keeping a torch as a party member's weapon isn't your style, don't fear. There are plenty of magic alternatives to a torch.

Enchant an item or summon a sphere to shine with the light of the sun in a 15m radius. An item will be enchanted for 20 turns, while the sphere will persist until a long rest.

Some of these spells can be granted through items. Komira's Locket is an example that is available very early on.
