Baldur's Gate 3 sports some of the most interesting and compelling characters that we've ever seen in an RPG. They have rich backgrounds that you can tease out of them by getting close to them, and personal quests that are satisfying to complete.

Baldur's Gate 3: Where You Should Go First

You can do a lot of things when your first start your journey in Baldur's Gate 3. Here are our recommendations.

One such potential companion is Karlach, who is also one of the possible Origin Characters who you can make your main avatar in the world of Faerun. If you don't make her your avatar, though, you'll have to track down the feisty Barbarian Tiefling yourself. She's hidden away quite well, though!

Updated January 8, 2024: We've added some more specific instructions on how to get to Karlach as soon as possible.

How To Find Karlach

There are ostensibly two ways to find Karlach in the game:

• The first is to stumble across her while exploring the first large area of the game, though she's rather hidden away and you have to get close to begin a cutscene with her.
• The second is to talk to Wyll at the Druid Grove and recruit him to your party. His first personal quest is to find Karlach, who he believes to be an evil demon. This will give you a general area marked on your map where you can find Karlach.

Karlach is located on the Risen Road. Specifically, she is to the southeast of the area, at the following coordinates: X:111, Y:503. She will be on a rocky outcropping over a narrow river.

A few steps away from Karlach's location, you can find a Toll Collector's Key (X:102, Y:522). This can be used in the basement of the building nearby, which Karlach will direct you to as part of her personal quest.

Directions To Karlach's Location

To get to Karlach as soon as possible, take the following steps:

• After crashing onto the beach and getting your bearings, possibly picking up some other companions, head to the Emerald Grove.
• Complete the battle at the Emerald Grove entrance.
• Walk past the Emerald Grove and follow the straight path until you reach a bridge. Click the video above to see the directions above demonstrated for you.
• Cross the bridge and then turn right into the Forest area.
• Past Scratch the dog, there will be a gap in the tree boundary that leads to the river.
• Use your Jump action to leap across the river.
• On the other side, climb up the rocks and then turn to the right - Karlach will be just a few more steps in front of you.

This way, you can recruit Karlach without having to make your way through the Blighted Village.

How To Get Karlach To Join Your Party

Simply speak to Karlach, and you'll be able to get her story, as with all the other companions. She'll state her case and give you some background, and you'll be able to ask her to join you. If you have space in your party, you'll be able to take her right along; if you don't have space, she'll simply head to your camp.

If you have Wyll in your party, however, things are more complicated. He will try to get you to kill Karlach, but it's very easy to convince him to stand down, and he will actually gain approval if you point out that he knows she's not a devil. Once you've calmed Wyll down, you can carry on the conversation with Karlach as normal and recruit her if you wish.

If you haven't recruited Wyll at all and you recruit Karlach, a scene will play out when you next go camping in which Wyll arrives at your camp to kill Karlach. This allows you to recruit Wyll even if you miss him at the Druid Grove.
