PostsHowever, when you defeat one of the optional bosses in the game, the Grovekeeper Topoda, and learn the Mantis Punch adaptation, you become able to destroy them. Given this context, it would be a shame not to interact with the X spots you frequently encounter. So, let's explore together how to interact with these X spots.
Unlock The Spearfishing Skill
The first thing you need to do to dig up X spots is to go to The Moon Snail’s Domain. You need to go here to progress the main story after you first speak with The Duchess. If you haven't met Moon Snail, make sure to meet and talk with her.
Then, you need to unlock the Spearfishing skill by talking to her. Before that, don't forget that you need to unlock Skewer first. To unlock Spearfishing, you need to pay a total of 20 Umami Crystals.
Make Sure You Have Barbed Hooks
The Spearfishing skill has two uses. One of them is to disrupt the balance of enemies. While it’s easier to disrupt the balance of smaller enemies, disrupting the balance of larger enemies is difficult and requires you to play a mini-fishing game.
Each Barbed Hook you use to disrupt the balance of enemies will consume your hook uses, which are displayed next to the Heartkelp Pod icon in the bottom right corner, whether you are successful or not. Another use of this skill is for digging up X spots. This skill also consumes one Barbed Hook from your inventory each time it is used.
Luckily, finding or purchasing Barbed Hooks is not a difficult task. Barbed Hooks can drop from small enemies in the game, primarily Sardines. These drops glow green on the ground, so make sure to pick them up.
Additionally, Barbed Hooks are sold at the Prawn Shop in the Lower Crust of New Carcinia and are quite affordable. The price of one Barbed Hook is 50 microplastics, while buying ten costs 450 microplastics.
To increase the number of Barbed Hooks you can carry at once, you should get a Tackle Pouch or find them in various places throughout the game.
Identify Diggable X Spots
After obtaining enough Barbed Hooks, you need to find X spots. Fortunately, there are many locations in the game where you can find X spots. However, finding one is not enough; you need to identify which of the X spots can be excavated using the Spearfishing skill.
If you have experienced this and accidentally passed over an X spot, you have likely witnessed a frightening scenario. A massive worm emerges from the location of the X spot, grabs you in its mouth, and then disappears with your shell.
To identify diggable X spots with Spearfishing, hold down the button you use for the fishhook ability, which you use to latch onto things. If a blue target icon appears over the X spot, it is a diggable point. If no blue target appears, it is a trap, meaning it is an area where worms are hiding.
Digging X Spots With Spearfishing
First, if you have found a safe X spot and your hook uses in the bottom right corner are not at zero, you can dig this X spot. To do this, use the fishhook button on the X spot. This will initiate a mini-game.
You have alimited amount of time to complete this mini-fishing game. It's quite simple. A line attached to the fish icon at the top moves and changes position. You control the bottom part of this line.
Your goal is to adjust the bottom part to make the line straight. In other words, whatever angle the top part is at, you need to make the bottom part the exact opposite, creating a straight line.
Whether you succeed or fail in this mini-game, you will lose one of your hook uses in the bottom right corner, and one Barbed Hook will be consumed from your inventory. When you dig X spots, you can either find junk that grants you microplastics or Stowaways.
Additionally, once you dig an X spot, it disappears. So, you will need to find new safe X spots to discover new items.
Fishing In The Gunk
Besides playing the mini fishing game with X spots, you are not limited to just them. If you look carefully in the gunk rivers or lakes, you will see white ripples. Just like with X spots, you can fish in these white ripples.
You can find these ripples more frequently in areas with many gunk lakes or rivers, such as Flotsam Vale or Expired Grove. Just like the X spots, if you successfully fish in these white ripples, they will disappear.
