Mischievous characters inject humor and unpredictability into the narrative, often serving as the perfect counterbalance to a game’s darker moments. Whether they’re playing pranks, bending the rules, or outwitting friend and foe alike, these characters bring a sense of levity that keeps the adventure engaging.

9 Saku

.hack//G.U. Last Recode

Close

Sakubo is one of the more unique and memorable characters in The World, thanks to the fact that they're actually two people sharing a single player character. Played by the sibling duo Saku and Bo, Sakubo is a Shadow Warlock whose personality flips depending on who's in control. Bo is the soft-spoken, gentle half: shy, polite, and deeply respectful, especially toward Haseo, whom he sees as a big brother figure. Saku, on the other hand, is loud, fiery, and often chaotic, never hesitating to stir up drama if it gets her what she wants.

Saku is especially possessive of Endrance, fiercely loyal to him and wildly jealous of anyone else who catches his attention, Haseo included. Her emotions often override logic, and she's not above throwing a tantrum or causing trouble if it means helping Endrance or stealing a moment of his focus. While Saku can be abrasive, her devotion is sincere, if not a little misguided.

8 Sampo Koski

Honkai: Star Rail

Close

Sampo Koski is the kind of guy who could sell snow in the middle of Jarilo-VI’s eternal winter. A fast-talking, smooth-operating salesperson in Honkai: Star Rail, Sampo always seems to know just the right angle to get what he wants... and just the right time to disappear when things go south. With a silver tongue and a flair for theatrics, he’s got a knack for finding profit in even the most chaotic situations.

His connections run deep, making him a hard man to avoid on Jarilo-VI. But if you choose to strike a deal with him, you'd better watch your back (and your wallet): Sampo always plays the game in a way that benefits him most. Charming, clever, and just a little slippery, he's as much a wildcard as he is an opportunist.

7 Palom

Final Fantasy 4

Close

Palom, alongside his twin sister Porom, is a prodigious mage from Mysidia in Final Fantasy 4. While Porom serves as a White Mage, offering essential healing and support, Palom takes on the role of a Black Mage, unleashing powerful elemental spells to devastate foes. With his exceptional magical prowess, he has proudly (and repeatedly) dubbed himself The Mysidian Genius, a title he never lets anyone forget.

Palom can learn every Black Magic spell in Final Fantasy 4.

Brash, boastful, and always ready to show off, Palom thrives on teasing his allies and inflating his own reputation. His antics often escalate into outright mischief, much to Porom’s exasperation. Fortunately, she keeps him in check, often resorting to a well-placed smack to the back of his head when he pushes things too far.

6 Youhu

Wuthering Waves

Close

Youhu, a four-star Glacio character, is Jinzhou’s premier antique appraiser, a self-proclaimed guardian of history with an unshakable passion for preserving the past. No relic is too obscure, no artifact too small - if it has cultural value, she’ll track it down. Whether she’s hunting for forgotten treasures or thwarting the schemes of treasure thieves, Youhu is determined to find each antique a home with someone who will truly cherish it. Though undeniably full of herself, her dedication to her cause and her eccentric charm make her impossible to dislike.

Youhu's mischievous nature extends to her Resonance Liberation. Once you activate Fortune's Favor, Youhu will throw her scroll at her enemies to inflict Glacio damage, which causes her to trip and lose her grip on her cauldron. At that point, you choose a random antique which will grant one of four different buffs.

Beyond her relentless pursuit of antiques, Youhu is a performer at heart. She crafts limericks on the spot, delivers razor-sharp one-liners, and has an uncanny ability to turn any situation into a stage for her wit. Throughout the game, she takes great delight in startling Rover at every opportunity, strong-arms people into reciting selections from her self-published book of poetry, and cunningly 'liberates' antiques from those she deems unworthy. Beneath her theatrical antics, however, lies a deep respect for history and an unwavering belief that every treasure deserves a worthy keeper.

5 Matthew

Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade

Matthew is a thief in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, first appearing as a spy observing Lyn’s group in battle. When Lyn later encounters him in town, he offers his services, joining the party as a thief capable of unlocking doors and chests to aid their progress.

With a carefree and cheeky personality, Matthew is quick with a witty remark and rarely lets his true feelings show. His lighthearted demeanor, however, serves as a mask for his deeper thoughts and emotions. Beneath his playful exterior, he is fiercely loyal to Hector and, by extension, Lyn and Eliwood.

4 Alvin Svent

Tales Of Xillia

Close

Alvin is a mercenary in Tales of Xillia, first appearing when he rescues Jude and Milla early in the game. Impressed by his skills, Milla hires him to teach her swordplay, leading him to join the party. Though he presents himself as a laid-back and charismatic adventurer, Alvin is far more complex than he lets on. Beneath his confident smirk lies a man torn between loyalty, survival, and the secrets he keeps from his companions.

A notorious smart-aleck, Alvin masks his true feelings with teasing, pranks, and witty banter. He thrives on wordplay and practical jokes, often at the expense of his friends. One of his most infamous antics occurs when Jude innocently asks him what "bazongas" are. With expert mischief, Alvin strings Jude along until the poor boy unknowingly shouts, "Teach me about bazongas!"...right as the women of the party overhear.

Once Rowan, an elderly butler, joins the party, he and Alvin regularly team up to antagonize their friends.

3 Sans

Undertale

Close

Undertale follows the story of Frisk, a young child who falls into the Underground, a mysterious world inhabited by monsters. Along the way, you meet a variety of quirky, heartfelt, and often hilarious characters, but one of the most iconic by far is Sans the skeleton.

Sans is immediately recognizable thanks to his laid-back style: a blue hoodie, gym shorts, and slippers. He’s known for his love of pranks, especially when it comes to his brother, Papyrus. Some of his jokes are delightfully simple, like a whoopee cushion or an unscrewed bottle of ketchup, while others hint at deeper layers of planning and observation.

2 Fen'Harel

Dragon Age: Inquisition

Close

Fen’Harel, also known as the Dread Wolf, is the elven god of betrayal and rebellion in Dragon Age lore. Shrouded in mystery and conflicting legends, he is both revered and feared. Among his many titles, he is called the Lord of Tricksters, a name that reflects his cunning nature and the ambiguity of his true motives.

It was Fen’Harel’s mastery of deception that allowed him to carry out The Great Betrayal, an event that reshaped the fate of the elven world. Gaining the trust of both the Evanuris (the powerful elven gods) and the Forgotten Ones, he led each group to believe he was one of their own. When the time was right, he approached them separately, spinning tales of a powerful sword hidden in a distant location.

Lured by the promise of this legendary weapon, both groups ventured into his carefully-laid trap. Once they were in place, Fen’Harel sealed them away, cutting them off from the mortal realm and leaving himself the last remaining god.

1 Team Yell

Pokemon Sword And Shield

Close

Every mainstream Pokemon game features an antagonist team with its own distinct goals; some seek power, others want to reshape the world, and others just want a place in society. But Pokemon Sword and Shield introduce a unique spin on this formula with Team Yell, a group of rowdy, overly enthusiastic fans who exist solely to support their favorite Trainer, Marnie.

Unlike the villainous organizations of past games, Team Yell isn’t out to conquer the world or exploit Pokemon. Instead, they dedicate themselves to ensuring Marnie’s success in the Gym Challenge, often at the expense of other Trainers, including you. Whether it's blocking pathways, interrupting battles, or issuing relentless challenges, they do everything in their power to give Marnie an advantage, even if she never asked for their help.
