You're an adventurer tasked with saving the various islands in the sky in the survival game Aloft. You can soar through the air, moving from one island to the other using your glider, but you'll also be able to use a smaller-sized island as a ship if you add the necessary sailing elements.

On your home island, you'll be able to create structures that will serve as a resting space. You can also create different machines that will refine resources and allow access to new technologies. There's even a way to make all your machines automated for maximum efficiency and convenience using a windmill.

How To Craft A Leaf Windmill

To craft a windmill, you'll first need to unlock the technology for it using a Vestige found in the Fallen Heights biome. The exact type of windmill you will be able to make is a Leaf Windmill.

To build one on your island base, you will need a few materials:

Material Needed

Quantity

Ingredients

Carved Wood

Wood x3

Hardstone x1

Leaf Cloth

Leaves x3

Wooden Cog

Carved Wood x2

Mykter Grease x3

Waxed Rope

When you have the necessary items, place the Leaf Windmill somewhere on your island facing towards your helm. Before you left-click on the desired spot for your Leaf Windmill, select the style you prefer. Different styles will change the look of the Leaf Windmill's blades.

The different blade styles will not affect your Leaf Windmill's performance.

When you're happy with the selected blade style of your Leaf Windmill, left-click to secure it on the spot. You'll then be able to increase and decrease its height. As you increase the Leaf Windmill's height, you will be required to supply more Wood to your build.

After deciding on the height of your Leaf Windmill, you can adjust the size and number of the blades. Drag outward and inward to modify the size of the blades. Larger blades will require you to supply your build with more Leaf Cloth. To increase or decrease the number of blades on your Leaf Windmill, scroll up or down.

Once you're happy with all the settings left-click to finalize the location, style, and size of your Leaf Windmill.

How To Link A Leaf Windmill To Machines

To get your Leaf Windmill to automate the work on your different machines, you'll need to form connections between them. Go to your Leaf Windmill and place your crosshair on the spool. You'll then be given an option to either make links or remove links.

Press E to start a link, then head to a machine and create a connection with it by selecting the spool on the machine. You'll be able to continue making connections from one machine to another by linking each from spool to spool.

Machines can be powered by your Leaf Windmill as long as they are connected by every spool. There's no need to connect each machine straight to the Leaf Windmill.

The connection from one spool to the other only reaches a certain distance. To lengthen the distance that a connection can reach, you can build a Windmill Connector using Carved Wood, Windstone, and a Wooden Cog.

Place your Windmill Connecter in between two spools, and it will allow you to extend the reach of the connections.

How To Get A Leaf Windmill To Work

Your Leaf Windmill will not move unless wind is being supplied to it. That said, it has to be facing the direction of the wind in order to start functioning. If your Leaf Windmill is facing away from the wind, it will jitter as if it were stuck.

The best position for your Leaf Windmill to be in is facing your helm. That way, your island will be traveling along with the wind's flow while supplying power to your Leaf Windmill as it stands against the wind's direction.

When the wind direction moves away from where your Leaf Windmill is facing, it will lose efficiency. You can view your Leaf Windmill's efficiency by hovering over the spool. The number in green shows power supplied while the number in red indicates power taken by the machines. The result shows how efficiently you are supplying power to your machines.

Every additional machine at work will raise the red number, reducing your Leaf Windmill's efficiency. To increase the green number, you can build additional Leaf Windmills and make sure they're linked anywhere in the connection.

Ensure that your Leaf Windmills are facing the same way to have them all perform at their best when facing the wind.
