The Cult of the Tree hides in plain sight in Alan Wake 2, as evidenced by the locked boxes full of supplies that they leave for their members. Even the peaceful town of Bright Falls has several of these hidden stashes. Finding and opening them is a great way to make sure that you're fully prepared when the Taken attack.

Alan Wake 2: Cauldron Lake Cult Stash Location Guide

Return to Cauldron Lake frequently in Alan Wake 2 to find more Cult Stashes with valuable loot!

Posts

Most of the Cult Stashes in Bright Falls can't be accessed until fairly late in the game, so it's a good idea to return often and explore new areas that become available. The rewards are well worth the effort!

Updated November 26, 2023: We've added a video version of this guide to help you get the goodies out of these stashes.

Town Square

Look for a white van parked in front of the lodge where Saga and Casey are staying. There’s a large box on the driver’s side.

All you need to to to open this stash is copy the sequence that lights up on the lock.

Bunker Woods

When you return from Watery after completing Local Girl, you’ll be able to explore the woods north of Bright Falls. Start by traveling along the northwest path from the Break Room; the stash there can be opened by copying the pattern on the lock.

How Many Cars In The Factory

An abandoned truck near the edge of the lake, south of the Break Room near the Nursing Home, has a Cult Stash with a combination lock.

The combination to the lock is a word problem; you need to figure out how many vehicles out of 200 are cars, based on knowing that there are 754 wheels divided between the cars and bikes.

If C is the number of cars and B is the number of bicycles, we know that:

  • B+C = 200
  • 2B + 4C = 754

With some algebra, we can determine the answer as follows:

  • B + 2C = 377
  • B = 377 - 2C
  • (377 - 2C) + C = 200
  • 377 - C = 200
  • C = 377 - 200
  • C = 177

The correct combination to the lock is 177.

Fishing Pier

After completing Old Gods, you can use the Bolt Cutters to access the docks in Bright Falls, between the hotel lodge and the Oh Deer Diner. Enter the wooden structure immediately to your right after crossing the fence to find a Cult Stash with a combination lock.

This box has a drawing of a wooden pylon sticking up from the water. Head out onto the pier and look for similar pylons in the ocean nearby. Some have placards with numbers on them.

Enter the numbers in order from the furthest from the water to the closest; the combination 697 will open the box.

Work Log

Use the Bolt Cutters to open the gate in the alley to the left of Oh Deer Diner. You’ll find the open plot of land between the sheriff’s office and the funeral home.

The Cult Stash here has a number of dates and objects around town listed. Head to the park in the southeast corner. There, your flashlight will reveal Cult symbols in the satellite dish of the adjoining building, the ground next to the main flower bed, and the floor of the gazebo.

Return to the stash and enter the symbols on the lock in the order they’re shown on the list to open it.

Morgue

When you enter the Morgue under the Sheriff’s Station during Return 6, use the Bolt Cutters to open the door immediately to the right at the bottom of the stairs.

The note taped to the box has several shapes drawn on it; a line, a triangle with a slash through it, and a hexagon. The combination is the number of strokes used to draw each shape.

Enter 146 on the lock to get the ammo in the box.

Ranger’s Cabin

The hill opposite the Ranger’s Cabin at the southern edge of Bunker Woods has a Cult Stash with only an old black-and-white engraving as a clue. If you look closely, you’ll see that it depicts Santa Claus and his sleigh.

Go across the trail to the Ranger’s Cabin and look on the ground outside. The key to the stash is hidden in the grass next to the chimney, on the left.

Hidden Arrows

The box northeast of the southernmost Break Room in Bunker Woods is almost always guarded by a group of Taken - be careful as you approach!

Shine your flashlight on the tree above the box to find an arrow. Follow the arrows, paying attention to the Cult symbols painted on the rocks along the path. The third and final symbol is a wooden glyph hanging near a tree.

Enter the symbols on the lock in the order they appear on the path to access the stash.

Western Woods

Venturing deeper into the forest, you can find a Cult Stash southwest of the Wellness Center.

Be ready for a fight, as there are powerful Taken in this area!

Like the previous box, this one requires you to follow several arrows that appear under the flashlight. Ignore them; they’ll just take you around in a circle.

Instead, look for discarded navigation signs on the ground, painted blue. Follow these arrows instead. The last one requires you to walk straight for a while with no further navigation, but after cutting through some bushes and going down a hill you’ll find the last sign, which points to the key.
