The first case of the Ace Attorney Investigations collection begins with a veritable bang. For this being Miles Edgeworth's first solo game, it sure doesn't behave with kindness towards him - the first glimpse we get of our protagonist is being held at gunpoint in his own office - talk about stress!

Thankfully, this is something of a tutorial case both in length and in difficulty. It won't take long to get to grips with investigating crime scenes, interviewing witnesses, and solving the murder presented in front of you. If you're having any trouble with the logic required here, however, we've got you covered.

Investigation: High Prosecutors' Offices - Room 1202

Before this investigation kicks off in earnest, you'll be given a quick tutorial to Edgeworth's logic mechanic. Hit the logic button at the top of the screen and perform the following combination:

Logic Combination

Crime scene: My office

+

The office key

After this and the rest of the introduction, you'll be allowed to explore the office and examine objects freely. Examine the following points of interest:

  • The body on the ground.
    • The police badge next to the body.
    • The body itself.
    • The pile of books next to the body.
    • The books smeared with blood in the bookshelf.
  • The gun on the ground.

Once you've examined these two areas (and the sub-areas near the body), it's time to make some deductions.

Logic Combination

Victim was a detective

+

The revolver

After pairing the first two clues together, you'll need to examine the revolver. Choose to examine the cylinder of chambers with ammo in them, and you'll learn more about what happened here.

The following scenes will lead into the second half of the investigations. Once you're given free control again, examine the following:

  • The framed jacket on the ground. When asked to point out the contradiction, click on the bullet hole and Deduce using the Victim's Revolver.
    • When presented with the safe, examine the keypad.

With this done, we can make our next deductions:

Logic Combination

The killer's goal

+

Wiped fingerprints

Signs of a struggle

+

Motive: Theft (?)

This deduction will lead to an examination of the bookshelf behind the victim's original position. Examine the bloody handprints, the books, and the book with a bullet hole on the bottom row.

Deduce the book with a bullet hole in it and present the Crime Scene Notes to point out a contradiction. The faulty assumption here is 'The order of the files'.

With the new aspect, examine the book with a bullet hole and the big gap in the books to the right to proceed.

The completion of this investigation will lead right into your first cross-examination of the game against Jacques Portsman. If you need a tutorial, there's one offered to you - if you've played any of the mainline Ace Attorney games, you can treat these as any other cross-examination.

Cross-Examination: Mr. Portsman's Logic

  1. Present the Stolen File at the fourth statement: "But thanks to that, you didn't notice the bloody letters his body was hiding."

This is a very simple cross-examination and leads straight into the second.

Cross-Examination: Reason For Suspicion

  1. Press the first statement: "It's pretty obvious that Ms. Byrde snuck into your room using the master key."
  2. Ask for more details when prompted.
  3. Present the Secret Safe at the new statement: "Her intent? From the messed-up shelves to the wiped-down safe, I'd say thievery."

This brings you neatly to the second half of the case and the second investigation.

Investigation: Prosecutor's Building - 12th Floor Hallway

Start here by talking to Maggey about every dialogue option she has. Present her with the Master Key and then talk to her about the new options that appear, which deal with the key and Jacques Portsman. Then, examine the following:

  • The basketball on the ground.
  • The basketball hoop and the door it's next to.
    • The number plate on the door.
    • The doorknob.
    • The basketball hoop.
  • The door to Edgeworth's office.
    • The number plate on the door.
    • The doorknob.
  • The padded bench to the left.
    • The file underneath the bench.

With this, you can make a deduction!

Logic Combination

Master key was stolen

+

Used the master key

With this complete, examine Portsman's door again and Deduce the doorknob, using Mr. Portsman's Office as evidence of a contradiction.

State that you need to examine the prints on the doorknob and then, after the quick scene, state that Maggey Byrde's prints should have been on there.

You'll be prompted to examine the floor this time. Look at the following:

  • The paper sticking out underneath the door.
  • The marks around the basketball hoop base.

Upon the completion of this investigation, you'll return to your office and confront Portsman.

Cross-Examination: Mr. Portsman's Rebuttal

  1. Present theMaster Key at the third statement: "Besides, how, may I ask, do you propose I unlocked your door and got in here?"
  2. Assert that he directed Maggey Byrde to open the door.
  3. Assert that the object he used to fool Maggey was the Basketball Hoop.

Cross-Examination: Conjecture's Rebuttal

  1. Present the Note Left by Victim at the third statement: "After that, I was in my room the entire time."
  2. To prove that he used Byrde, present Mr. Portsman's Office.

Cross-Examination: Portsman's Alibi

  1. Press all four statements in order.
  2. Make the following Logic Combination: Mr. Portsman's alibi + Another handgun.
  3. Make the following Logic Combination: Files in disarray + Another visitor.

Cross-Examination: Portsman's Alibi, Pt. 2

  1. Press the fourth statement: "And when Jim came to deliver some evidence to me, I was down at Criminal Affairs."
  2. Present the Note Left by Victim at the new statement: "He brought me two items, a gun and a pendant, that are related to yesterday's case."
  3. When prompted to examine the tape, turn it around and click on the bloodstain.

With that action, Portsman is dealt with. The only other prompt in this case is to present a piece of evidence which had no impact - this time, present the Stolen 0-Series File.
