Summary
- Xbox has pushed Avowed's release date back to February 18, 2025.
- Xbox says it has done this to give Avowed more "breathing room," and to potentially avoid clashing with other titles it has releasing later this year.
It's looking like a pretty jam-packed end to the year for video games, with October and November both bursting with big titles that threaten to devour both our cash and free time. It's a real wrestling match between developers for our attention, but Xbox and Obsidian reckon the fight isn't worth the risk with Avowed.
In a new post on the official Xbox Twitter account, the company has confirmed previous reports that Avowed will be pushed back from its original release date of 2024 in order to give the title "some breathing room." Instead, Avowed is now launching on February 18, 2025, a month which doesn't currently include any other big game launches.
While delays are usually a sign of trouble (despite what that Miyamoto quote says), a report from earlier this week has assured fans that Obsidian thinks Avowed is actually in good shape. Xbox is simply worried about launching the game in a busy period of Xbox Game Pass, with titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Stalker 2, and Starfield's Shattered Space DLC all still to launch at some point later this year.
2024's Final Months Are Looking Pretty Stacked Without Xbox
Even if you take out all of Xbox's big holiday games this year, 2024's final few months are still pretty stacked. You have titles like Silent Hill 2, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Sonic X Shadow Generations, and (reportedly) Dragon Age: The Veilguard all launching in October, while November also has a few big RPGs in Assassin's Creed Shadows, Dragon Quest 3's HD-2D Remake, and Mario & Luigi: Brothership.
Avowed has been looking pretty good and Obsidian's name has some heft behind it, but releasing a new IP among that lot, including several other games that will be included in Xbox Game Pass, is an obvious recipe for disaster. The longer wait sucks, of course, but Avowed now has space to succeed, while we've got plenty of games coming to Game Pass to pass the time.
