Oblivion Remastered has remade its fantastic Dark Brotherhood questline in lavish current-gen detail, which is very good news indeed for anyone who has cherished the original game's terrific assassin faction storyline for years. Most Dark Brotherhood quests are memorable in their own right, and 'Permanent Retirement' certainly numbers among them.

Killing your target in 'Permanent Retirement' without triggering a severe bounty can be a challenging affair - as befits someone of your growing stature within the Dark Brotherhood. We've done the deed, ending the life of Adamus Phillida without detection and earning our bonus via the removal of his finger. Here's how.

How To Start 'Permanent Retirement'

Start by grabbing 'The Assassin's Gambit' from Lucien. Head to Ocheeva again; this time, she wants you to bring down Adamus Phillida. You'll find him in Leyawiin. There's a nice little gift involved: the Rose of Sithis, a one-shot, one-kill arrow. So long as he's not wearing armour, at least.

The thing is, the Rose of Sithis will only work if the target is Adamus Phillida. Suffice it to say, then, you'll want to save it for him. It's handcrafted to eliminate this one target with a 100 percent kill chance. Very sweet stuff.

A Rose By Any Other Name

Head to Leyawiin when you're ready. Be advised that Adamus is rather powerful when he's properly equipped. Not to mention, attacking him understandably causes quite the clamor; the guards will be on you like nobody's business, including his similarly strong bodyguard.

While there are myriad ways to kill Adamus, from a full-on fight to the Poisoned Appletrick that kills victims as soon as they ingest the item after you've covertly placed it on their person, let's stick with the "intended" approach, as it's arguably the easiest overall.

Around 3 pm each day of the week, Adamus enters the pond for a swim. At this time, he is not wearing his armour. Mind you, his bodyguard is still with him, but all things considered, this is the ideal scenario.

Search for a spot in town at a nice angle to avoid detection, such as behind a building not too close to the pond, but close enough to make the shot. From there, shoot the Rose of Sithis into Adamus' body, quickly hiding afterward.

Point The Finger

When you get the chance, loot Adamus' finger off of his corpse. Take his keys while you're at it, as it will make our next step that much easier.

Our destination is the Prison District in the Imperial City. You need to enter the Imperial Legion Office, and the best time to do so is after 3 am and before 6-7 am. Just the same, use Sneak or an invisibility spell to be safe.

Head to the marked desk. Switch over to your inventory after clicking the Search button (R3 on a PlayStation controller), place the finger inside the desk, and return to Ocheeva for your base reward as well as the bonus you've just earned for a job grossly-done.
