Alix Wilton-Regan is our new Lara Croft, playing the heroine in Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst. As we've seen in the trailers, this is a very different version of the character than we got in the most recent games, going back to the snark and the confidence of her 1990s self.

Speaking with IGN, Wilton-Regan explains how she crafted this version of Lara. When asked to describe her in a word, she says Lara is "unapologetic", and that Lara's confidence is being felt by early players, no matter who they are.

The New Lara Croft Is For Everyone, Says Alix Wilton-Regan

Wilton-Regan explains why she picked this word to describe Lara, and what it means for her.

"It was something me and my girls were talking about around the new year, and a couple of people came up with 'unapologetic'," she says. "And then I had this interview, and I got asked by the guys at Amazon, what is the word for Lara? On the spot, I just went, 'unapologetic'.

"She's so completely confident in herself, her abilities, her brain, her body, her being. She just doesn't question herself. And I think, particularly as women, we spend a lot of time questioning ourselves. She doesn't."

Wilton-Regan says that this female confidence is passing onto the players, regardless of who they are. "One of the best [pieces of] feedback that we've had about this game and the people who are playing the demo is that the men are getting this confidence. This kind of Lara Croft charisma and sheen," she shares. "It's not just one for the women. It's the girls. It's the guys. It's the gays."

As Tomb Raider looks to reinvent itself again, it should pay attention to past successes.

True enough, Lara's fanbase has historically been one for the girls, guys, and gays. Guys might be seen as her more obvious audience, given her history as one of the first (if not the first) video game pin-ups. But plenty of ladies resonated with her confidence and intelligence way back when as well. She also has a huge LGBTQ+ following. Going by what I'm seeing on social media, every sapphic gamer is feral for Lara right now.
