However, every few years, we are treated to a plot which spans every inch of the website, changing our daily grind, and encouraging us to solve mysteries. They've even infiltrated the core coding of Neopets a few times! Here are some of our favorites since Neopets began.

10 The Arrival Of Virtupets

Release Date

August 2000

Location

Space

Rewards

None

The very first Neopets plot began in Year 2, in August of 2000, and ran for only nine days. The site was still finding its feet at this point, and the plot introduced a lot of new NPCs and areas to interact with. First of all, you meet the Space Faerie who begs Neopia for help decoding a message she received from the brand-new villain, Dr Sloth. This added a very smug-looking individual, the Island Mystic. His image has since been updated.

As the concept of plots was very new, how players could help was limited. You could donate Codestones to the Mystic, collect materials to help get a rocket to the new Space Station, and adopt one of 20,000 Grundos to give the Space Faerie back her powers. Dr Sloth was (temporarily) defeated, though the Neopets he mutated into the new Grundo species remained the same.

9 Faeries' Ruin

Release Date

September 2010

Location

Haunted Woods, Faerieland

Rewards

Rare quests, Trophies, Wearables

In Year 12, Xandra, a new foe, entered the scene and petrified every faerie in Neopia. She had been brought up and trained by the faeries, and realized they often chose not to help Neopia's citizens despite being able to. Teaming up with the much-beloved villain Hubrid Nox, only to betray him and use his clone instead, Xandra infiltrated the Brightvale heroes who were on the hunt for the evil perpetrator.

You were able to puzzle out spells and defeat powerful Battledome opponents to help, and were rewarded with awesome prizes, trophies, site banners, faerie quests, and avatars.

8 Lost Desert

Release Date

August 2005

Location

Lost Desert

Rewards

Paintbrush, Battle Weapons

The Neopets Team threw everyone for a loop with this plot. Firstly, in 2005, they hinted that new Scrolls would be secretly found around the site. There were 12 kinds, and none of them actually found the general population, only planted 'fake' accounts. Then, a story about the cursed Qasala requiring the marriage of two ancient bloodlines to free the lost city led to Sahkmet being teleported.

You were tasked with collecting Tablet Fragments, of which only a few parts were relevant. The rest were red herrings to lead people into the wrong rooms within the Temple Maze. Upon finding the correct room out of a possible 291, you then had to uncover a repository, one handful of sand at a time. This plot was huge, went on for three months, and boasted the highest number of related threads on the Neoboards.

7 Neopets V2

Release Date

November 2001

Location

Neopia

Rewards

Battle Weapons, Trophies

Neopets wasn't just a way to blow off steam after school; it also taught basic programming skills. One such example was the unsettling, sentient code that wanted new friends. It appeared to be sneaking into areas all over the site, posing creepy questions to players who uncovered clues.

By following complex hints, the programmers of Neopets V2 could be tracked down all over Neopets, including visiting specific petpages, Neohomes, shops with items that don't exist, and breaking a vending machine within a 15-minute window. By using graphics programs and running new code, players were able to shut down Neopets V2 before it suffocated four kids.

6 Mystery Island Volcano

Release Date

October 2003

Location

Mystery Island

Rewards

Battle Weapons, Trophies

In a plot most foul, the beloved guardians of Mystery Island were kidnapped and needed Neopians to find and free them! In 2003, five well-known NPCs from Mystery Island went missing, and a faerie was sent to guard the volcano. Notes and footprints were left behind to start the trail all over the website, venturing into the Fetch! maze to find the Tiki Tack Man's mask, and beating the Techo Master's statue in the Battledome.

Eventually, all were saved, and it was discovered that the faerie Eithne was planning to release the volcano beast Moltenus, but was eaten instead, as the monster was controlled by an evil shaman.

5 The Lost Isle

Release Date

May 2007

Location

The Lost Isle

Rewards

Toys, Wearables, Trophies

Though this plot technically finished in 2007, it has been hinted that there will be a part two to round out the Lost Isle, which you can visit by finding it on the Map of Neopia. Getting there in the first place though, Neopians followed the storyline via a comic strip as a rag-tag crew got together to journey across the oceans in search of a forgotten land.

4 Usurper

Release Date

July 2001

Location

Sahkmet

Rewards

Neopoints

For a week in 2001, Neopets was abuzz with a murder-mystery puzzle. If you've ever wondered how the ghost of King Coltzan III got into that shrine in the Lost Desert, it all started with a dinner party. He'd invited five influential figures from his country, and one of them poisoned him at the table.

Everyone was provided a few hints, and then it was up to the players to figure out who the murderer was, what meal they ate, how many courses they had, and which terrible habit they had that annoyed the king. The first ten to guess correctly won two million Neopoints.

3 Ski Lodge Murder Mystery

Release Date

February 2001

Location

Terror Mountain

Rewards

Books, Photos

A similar concept, except involving the beloved staff members of TNT who went for a work retreat to a ski lodge in Terror Mountain, and never returned. In 2001, week by week, these kooky characters were garotted, crushed, electrocuted, poisoned, and strangled in humorous ways while cut off from the rest of the world.

Over the course of four months, Neopians were tasked with guessing who the murderer would turn out to be. Those whose guess consistently survived the slaughter received more points, and better prizes. In the end, Maverick was charged as the murderer. However, it turned out that he'd been killed on the way to the lodge, and it was really a robot controlled by Dr Sloth the whole time!

2 Green Jelly

Release Date

June 2003

Location

Jelly World

Rewards

None

A bit of a silly one, for sure. In 2003, Petpets began going missing, as was reported in the News feature on the website. It seemed there was nothing for players to do, other than sit and wait for their beloved Petpets to return.

1 Return Of Sloth

Release Date

January 2008

Location

Space Station, Kreludor

Rewards

Site Theme, Trophies, Wearables

Dr Sloth is back, and this time, he wants to mutate everyone in Neopia! His plan to excavate the radioactive Kreludite in the mines on the moon is thwarted by the Resistance, who've been working all this time to prepare for Dr Sloth resurgence.

Neopets was all about Flash games back in 2008, so a lot of the puzzles you had to solve were in this format, as well as testing Tokens to find the Space Faerie's secret weapon. After defeating a bunch of Battledome enemies, we succeeded in trapping Dr Sloth inside the Token, which now floats through space, menacingly.
