One of the greatest things about PC gaming has been the customization playing on a rig can offer, be it controls or the limits of your hardware. But another brilliant aspect of playing games on a PC is how truly diverse the array of games you can play on your machine is. 2024 showcases this with a fun variety of titles across many genres that lie in store for us.

TheGamer Staff's Most Anticipated RPGs Of 2024

We can't wait to sink our time into these RPGs!

We here at TheGamer are longing for the year to roll around so we can try out hands at being Victorian interdimensional explorers, skateboarders in hell, and of course space pirates. Read on if you want to see which PC games of 2024 we're most looking forward to.

Updated December 9, 2023: PCs have always been one of the most versatile platforms to play games on, and this is clearly evidenced by the array of games we're looking forward to playing on ours come the new year. We've updated this list to include yet more titles making their way to PCs in 2024. Hold on to your keyboards because we are in for one heck of a good time.

Zephon

Matt Arnold, Specialist Writer

I cannot resist the call of 4X strategy, and I’ve had Zephon locked in my sights since it was announced. It’s a gorgeous yet eerie sci-fi game about transhumanism and eldritch monsters from Proxy Studios, the team behind the excellent Warhammer 40k: Gladius.

Every bit of news about Zephon, from its setting to the gameplay, makes me want to play it more. If it lives up to my expectations, I’ve probably got a slot for my 2024 GOTY picks locked in already.

Path Of Exile 2

Jacqueline Zalace, Staff Writer

Last year, I was hopeful that Path of Exile 2 would come out. After a full year passed, I was met with no such luck. Here's looking to 2024 though! The closed Beta for Path of Exile 2 starts in June, and I'm excited to get lost in the sheer amount of content there is.

I had never played a game like Path of Exile before I played the first one, but it immediately captured my heart. Something was so satisfying about sorting through gems and preparing the best armor. The second game boasts 240 Skill Gems and 200 Support Gems, so I expect to spend plenty of time just reading gem descriptions while standing in town.

Nightingale

Amanda Hurych, Evergreen Content Lead

Nightingale is set to release in early access next year, and I’m hoping a full release will also follow suit shortly after. In case you haven’t heard, Nightingale looks to be something like the next Valheim. You can build little outposts, upgrade gear, and just do all those things we like to do in typical survival sandbox games.

But the fantasy trappings for Nightingale are what caught my eye the most when its first trailers were revealed. It has blended these fantastical environments with Victorian-era accouterments that make it stand out from the crowd of survival games we typically see. And the combat looks magical and gritty and just, AGH, it looks so cool. Plus, I’m a sucker for cooperative experiences, so this is def on my wishlist.

Helldivers 2

Trevor Ford, Social Media Manager

The Gamescom trailer was cheesy, but I’m still going to be an absolute sucker for this cooperative shooter. 90% of the reason I play games is to enjoy time with friends, and if all I need to explain it is “Monster Hunter but in space with guns,” it’s a perfect fit. The gunplay looks clean, the aliens are interesting, and the missions look to have the perfect jump in/jump out structure that makes getting a few games in an easy pitch. I can’t wait to blame Dexter for calling in an airdrop on our entire squad.

Skull And Bones

Ben Sledge, Features Editor

Someone’s got to say it, right? I’m not excited for Skull and Bones in the regular sense. It’s not that I think it looks really good, that I think it will scoop up Game of the Year awards, or that I think it will reinvent the naval warfare genre (is that even a thing?). I’m just intrigued as to what this game will be. It’s had more reboots than my PC when Windows rolls out a new update, and my morbid curiosity won’t be sated until I’ve played the final product.

Who knows what it’s going to be like. Maybe it’ll be good, maybe it’ll be a steaming puddle of bilge water. My best guess is that Ubisoft has not only shot itself in the foot, but bought a brand-new pair of trainers before doing so. I can’t wait to pick through the resulting viscera to see what piratical meat has fallen off those shattered metatarsals.

Helskate

Stacey Henley, Editor-in-Chief

It doesn’t seem like we’re getting a new Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater game any time soon, which means Helskate has an open road into my heart. Made by one of the THUG developers, Helskate takes the classic THPS mechanics and wraps it around a roguelike formula that sees you battle demons as much as you bust moves.

We’ve had a feast of triple-A games this year, but next year might be leaner as all those delays catch up to each other and we return to normal. It might be up to indies to carry the momentum next year, but with Helskate and a dozen others I have my eye on, I think they’ll be up to the task.

S&Box

James Troughton, Cross-Department Editor

We haven’t heard much about the spiritual successor to Garry's Mod, though S&Box is supposedly coming out in 2023 for early access. The lack of substantial developments has me doubting that, but I’m excited nonetheless for whenever it does come, as Garry’s Mod was a huge part of my formative years.

I have well over 2,000 hours across Jailbreak, TTT, sandbox, RP, and other modes. It was where I met other LGBTQ+ people still trying to find a way out of the closet, where I coped with traumatic days I wanted to push aside, and where I grew to appreciate gaming in a new light, lifting up the hood to see how it all comes together. I hope the sequel can reignite that spark, but mostly, I’m just excited to see how S&Box can innovate on what was already the perfect community-driven formula.

Throne And Liberty

David W. Duffy, Database Editor

Delayed into 2024 in order to radically change aspects that didn’t sit well with beta players, such as autoplay and the prominence of microtransactions, Throne and Liberty could well see Amazon finally getting it right with an MMO. It looks fantastic; a detailed world, the ability to shift into animal form seemingly at will, and colossal siege set-pieces, all appeal.

All of this is a big if, though — after all, New World had a ton of promise at first. While I played a lot when it first launched, it was never a game that convinced me to return after being sidetracked by the many prominent launches over the last year. If Amazon can prove they have actually listened, then this could be massive. All of this could equally apply to Blue Protocol, too, another MMO I’ve had one eye on.

Hyper Light Breaker

Joshua Robertson, News Editor

One of my favourite indie games ever is Hyper Light Drifter, a brutally challenging, neon-soaked love letter to old-school Zelda that left a pretty big impression on me when it launched back in 2016. Almost 8 years and one Solar Ash later, Heart Machine is back with Hyper Light Breaker, and it’s traded in structured 2D dungeon crawling for procedurally generated 3D open worlds.

That’s why Hyper Light Breaker is such an interesting prospect to me. It would have been easy for Heart Machine to make a basic sequel, but it’s choosing to be adventurous and attempt something that very few developers have attempted. Early trailers for the game look phenomenal, oozing that familiar Hyper Light Drifter style but in a completely different setting. It looks like a very ambitious project, and I’m excited to see if Heart Machine sticks the landing when Hyper Light Breaker launches in early access next year.

Star Wars Outlaws

Helen Ashcroft, Evergreen Trainer and Editor

Over the years, Star Wars games have been very hit-and-miss. I am incredibly aware of this and am trying to keep my excitement in check, but Outlaws has something I’ve long wanted in a Star Wars game: a focus on scoundrels.

I’m not really set out for the life of a Jedi; all those mind tricks and light saber skills aren’t for me. But Outlaws is offering me something different. It's a chance to explore the galaxy’s hives of scum and villainy for myself. It promises a ship, a blaster, some gadgets and a scoundrel with a lot of guts. That’s it. Finally, I can be the space pirate I always wanted.
