It's been so long since the last proper installment in the Marvel vs. Capcom series (no, I'm not going to include Infinite) and Marvel has changed so much since that last game, most assumed it was gone for good. No new Marvel vs. Capcom games in the future was only part of what sucks about the series previously lying dormant, though. The lack of an easy way to play other Marvel vs. Capcom games has been a big issue too, hence the reveal of a Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection remaining one of the most welcome surprises of the year so far.

The Fighting Collection popped up out of nowhere during a jam-packed Nintendo Direct - the same one that included reveals of The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom and Mario & Luigi: Brothership. No release date, and then no sign of one in the weeks that followed. That was until the next Direct at the end of August during which it was revealed the Marvel vs. Capcom collection will be here soon. Very soon, in fact, as the digital version of the game will be released on September 12, 2024.

The best thing about Marvel and Capcom giving us a new way to play these games is there is no easy way to play them on modern platforms. However, while a digital release is all well and good, many fans of the series would be more comfortable for it to get a physical version too that can't be taken away from them again years from now. Thankfully a physical edition of the collection is coming, you'll just have to wait a little longer to get your hands on it.

Don't worry, there is a digital version of The Fighting Collection coming to PlayStation, you just can't pre-order it for some reason. Now, Xbox, on the other hand, bad news on that front. The collection currently isn't coming to Xbox at all.

You might be thinking $50 is a lot for a collection where only two of its games qualify for a retro gathering like this one, and you'd be right. There are seven games included with The Fighting Collection though because Marvel heroes and Capcom characters were clashing in video games long before the first game to carry the Marvel vs. Capcom title was released.

Joining Marvel vs. Capcom and Marvel vs. Capcom 2 in the collection are the two games in the series that came before them - X-Men vs. Street Fighter, and Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter. Also included are two Marvel fighting games that came before superheroes started clashing with Chun-Li and co, X-Men: Children Of The Atom, and Marvel Super Heroes. The strangest, but still welcome, inclusion in the collection is The Punisher. Not a fighting game at all, but a great idea to make it playable on modern platforms via this collection.

Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection will launch digitally on PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC on September 12, 2024, and then on those same platforms physically on November 22, 2024. No Xbox release for the collection has been announced.
