If you've been following MultiVersus for long enough, then you likely remember the days when it was rumoured to be a platform fighter from NetherRealm that featured Ultra Instinct Shaggy as a playable character. Most of that initial rumour didn't end up being true, but it was followed up with leaked design doc screenshots that gave us our first real look at MultiVersus before it was officially announced.

Although the early version of MultiVersus featured in that design document is remarkably similar to the final game, there are a number of notable changes, such as Steven using his Future design and Rick having an exaggerated cartoon look. The most interesting difference, however, is that Gandalf was featured as a playable character and was front and centre on the roster.

MultiVersus Has Added Gandalf's Textures Back Into The Game

Gandalf never ended up making it into MultiVersus due to the rights shifting from Warner Bros. to Amazon, which led to Player First Games removing all references to the character and even reworking one of his moves and giving it to Morty. That made it seem like he was never going to make it into MultiVersus, but the game's most recent patch suggests something has changed behind the scenes.

Yesterday, MultiVersus received its biggest update since the game launched, which added in a ton of fan-requested features and set the stage for Agent Smith's release in July. The update also gave dataminers a bunch of new content to dig through, giving us a good idea of who's coming to the game next. That's not all, though, as dataminers discovered that Gandalf's textures had also been added back into the game.

The patch also added some textures for the Hulk, which is reportedly from when MultiVersus was pitched as a Disney fighting game.

It's not clear why Gandalf's textures have been added back into MultiVersus, but it suggests that he could end up being added to the game in the future as a third-party character, which makes sense considering he was seemingly near completion. It could also just be an accident on Player First Games' part and end up meaning nothing, but it's an interesting discovery nonetheless.
