However, not every title from the N64 era has succumbed to the ravages of time. A select few have successfully retained their charm and fun, standing out as enduring favorites.

Despite sometimes facing criticism for my fondness for the Nintendo 64, I believe there are many titles deserving of respect and celebration. In this article, I invite you to explore the N64 games that have age remarkably well and are still enjoyable today.

8 Mario Kart 64

Still a Blast After All These Years

Mario Kart 64 holds a special place as my very first title for the Nintendo 64, one that I indulged in more than any other. It became a family favorite, bringing everyone together for late-night gaming sessions.

This classic kart-racing game marked a significant transition to 3D, rectifying many issues found in Super Mario Kart and delivering an exhilarating and addictive experience.

One of the standout features of Mario Kart 64 is that it hasn’t aged as poorly as some N64 titles. The gameplay holds up well, even during multiplayer sessions, and the diverse track selection ensures races are consistently enjoyable.

Unlike many games today that rely on rubber-banding, you can frequently enjoy clean victories, where a skilled player can truly dominate the track.

7 Diddy Kong Racing

Even Better Than Mario Kart

While Mario Kart 64 may be the more recognized title, Diddy Kong Racing arguably excels as a superior racing game on the N64.

Developed by Rare, this game cleverly combines three different vehicle types, memorable characters, and a captivating single-player experience, setting a gold standard that more recent titles strive to achieve.

Diddy Kong Racing offers a refreshing change in the kart racing genre, evoking comparisons to the upcoming Mario Kart World, which seems to echo the exploratory fun of this classic title.

This game stands out as more than just a Mario Kart imitation; it features its own identity, showcasing lively characters who later starred in their own adventures.

6 Wave Race 64

An Impressive Launch Title

At first glance, you might think that Wave Race 64 doesn’t hold up due to its limited gameplay options. Yet, its exceptional mechanics allow it to shine brightly.

Nintendo captured an unparalleled experience that other titles since have struggled to replicate. It combines straightforward design with captivating gameplay, resulting in a superb pick-up-and-play experience.

Retaining its charm over the years, the game remains a nostalgic favorite, especially when revisiting Nintendo Switch Online, accompanied by its iconic soundtrack.

I recently fired up Wave Race 64 while writing this list, and to my surprise, I lost track of time, immersed once again in its exhilarating world.

It’s disheartening to witness Star Fox struggle amidst Nintendo’s current successful era. Despite the upheaval of new consoles, Fox McCloud and his team have been notably absent.

This game serves as my go-to flight companion, effortlessly distracting me from any travel anxieties.

With branching paths enhancing replayability, each playthrough remains distinct. Although lacking modern capabilities like procedural generation, it provides enough variety to keep things fresh.

4 Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2

When Worlds Collide

As with many players, I have fond memories of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2, often mistaking its visuals for something far more advanced than they truly were. Nonetheless, the gameplay remains incredibly engaging to this day.

While the remastered edition breathes new life into the game, the original version still shines with nostalgia and charm.

It’s no wonder we returned to play these classics over the years; they offer gaming perfection, delivering an unforgettable experience reminiscent of the late ’90s and early 2000s.

In addition to the swift loading times and the absence of tedious cutscenes, players jump right into the action, seamlessly accompanied by a stellar soundtrack featuring hits like When Worlds Collide and Guerrilla Radio.

3 Paper Mario

One of the N64’s Best RPGs

The Nintendo 64 wasn’t particularly renowned for its RPGs, as players often gravitated towards the PlayStation 1 for iconic titles like Final Fantasy.

However, Paper Mario stands out as a beloved RPG that, while simple in gameplay mechanics, boasts heartwarming charm and witty writing.

Its distinctive paper-style aesthetic creates a unique visual vibe that enhances its endearing nature.

Rather than attempting to innovate excessively, Paper Mario successfully delivers an enjoyable experience that ages beautifully, seamlessly blending with other memorable RPGs of the period.

The classic turn-based combat is heightened with an engaging twist that encourages players to react to prompts, boosting their attacks and keeping combat engaging.

2 The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask

A Cult Classic

Majora’s Mask diverges significantly from its predecessor, Ocarina of Time, offering a darker and more complex narrative.

Despite Ocarina’s praise as a groundbreaking title for the N64, its gameplay doesn’t hold up as favorably over time.

Conversely, Majora’s Mask retains its freshness, thanks in large part to its inventive three-day cycle and departure from traditional Zelda formulas.

For new players, like myself who only engaged with it in the 2010s, the gameplay remains surprisingly enjoyable due to its unique mechanics.

While Nintendo has indicated future Zelda games will echo the style of Breath of the Wild, I can’t help but wish they would reconsider exploring innovative structures akin to Majora’s Mask.

1 Banjo-Kazooie

Platforming Perfection

Banjo-Kazooie is the epitome of a perfect game, effectively addressing the shortcomings of Super Mario 64 and providing a meticulously crafted, enchanting platforming adventure.

When asked what players love most about Banjo-Kazooie, opinions are as diverse as the game itself, from the abundance of collectibles and fascinating levels to the delightful soundtrack and witty character dialogue.

Personally, it’s hard for me to choose just one aspect—I relish every moment in Banjo-Kazooie, as Rare infused charm and vibrancy into every corner, including the expansive overworld.

From start to finish, the game invokes joy, making it a standout choice in the realm of platformers that endures even today.

Its whimsical character, captivating visuals, and engaging gameplay launch it into the ranks of timeless classics still worth playing.
