Which is the Best Game in The Legend of Heroes: Trails Series?

With the launch of The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak 2, it’s an excellent opportunity to delve into the often-overlooked legacy of this remarkable JRPG series. Personally, it ranks among my all-time favorite gaming franchises, and there are compelling reasons for this admiration. Few worlds boast the depth and intricacy of its lore. This begs the question: which title reigns supreme in The Legend of Heroes and Trails universe?

Criteria for the Best Trails Game

While opinions may differ, I’ve found that Trails of Cold Steel III stands out as my top choice among the entire Legend of Heroes series. It strikes an impeccable balance, weaving together an engaging narrative, well-developed characters, intricate lore, and enjoyable gameplay mechanics. From the vast, enriching side quests to the immensely detailed setting of Thors Branch Academy, this installment offers players a chance to immerse themselves fully in its world.

Character Development and Story Arc

One of the main highlights is its storytelling. The character arcs, particularly those of Ash and Juna, are compelling and resonate deeply. The depth of character development in Trails of Cold Steel III elevates it beyond mere gameplay, making it a standout title in my gaming portfolio.

Runner-Ups in the Series

Although Trails of Cold Steel III takes the crown for me, several other titles deserve recognition: Trails in the Sky, Trails from Zero, and the inaugural Trails of Cold Steel. Specifically, Trails in the Sky was my introduction to the series and remains one of the finest fantasy RPGs crafted to date. I eagerly await the upcoming remake, hopeful of recapturing the magic of exploring the land of Liberl.

The first Crossbell installment is equally remarkable, showcasing what I believe is the most beautifully designed city in video gaming history. And we can’t overlook the original Cold Steel, which expertly introduced a Persona-flavored high school setting that ultimately led me to my preferred title in the series.
