Unlocking Phantoms: The First Berserker Khazan Guide

The First Berserker: Khazan has become renowned for its challenging Soulslike gameplay, a fact that is well-known among gaming enthusiasts. While some gamers argue that the difficulty might be excessive, the game has still received a largely favorable reception.
To bolster your chances of overcoming the numerous challenges that await in this grueling title, leveraging various beginner tips can be extremely beneficial. However, one particularly crucial step right from the start can substantially enhance your prospects of success.
In Khazan, phantoms represent the souls of defeated bosses that can be equipped at a location called the Blade Nexus. Each phantom offers unique perks that can drastically alter the gameplay experience. When leveled up, these benefits can turn the tide of battle in your favor.
Let’s explore the process of acquiring your first phantom, so you can advance in The First Berserker: Khazan with newfound power.
Defeat Blade Phantom and Converse with Him at The Crevice
To access phantoms, your first task is to take down the Blade Phantom, a formidable boss that marks your initial significant hurdle in the game. You’ll encounter him at the end of the Trials of the Frozen Mountain level in Stormpass.
This encounter will thoroughly evaluate your comprehension of the game’s mechanics. You’ll need to be fully prepared to overcome this challenge.
If you require assistance, a detailed guide on defeating the Blade Phantom is available to streamline your efforts.
If the battle proves too daunting, consider lowering the difficulty to easy. This adjustment will make the fight manageable, although it will prevent you from reverting to normal difficulty afterward, so weigh your options carefully.
Upon defeating Blade Phantom, you will be rewarded with:
- 3, 571 Currency
- 8, 640 Tear
- Soul Eater’s Helm
- Soul Eater’s Wristguards
- Necklace of the Reclaimed
- Transmutation Mist x2
After your victory, Blade Phantom joins your quest as an ally. Engage with him to unlock fast travel capabilities and deepen your understanding of the game’s lore.
Defeat Keshta the Unyielding
Close
Before proceeding to the newly accessible areas opened up by your engagement with Blade Phantom, it’s wise to take a brief detour. Navigate to the large headstone slab next to Blade Phantom to access the fast travel map, select Stormpass, and initiate the mission titled “Stormpass’ Phantom of Combat.”
This mission is recommended for characters at level 17, but if your level is lower, feel free to challenge yourself. Should the difficulty be overwhelming, consider grinding for more Lacrima or selling unnecessary items in The Crevice for extra resources.
After fast-traveling, you’ll encounter dialogue with an older NPC you met previously. Engage with her for additional insights.
After this interaction, you’ll face an ominous fog gate, leading you into another challenging battle.
Prepare for combat against Keshta the Unyielding. The absence of a cutscene means you’ll dive straight into the action.
The good news is that Keshta’s attack patterns mirror those of Blade Phantom, so if you’ve memorized his moves, Keshta will not present significant surprises. Utilize your previously honed strategies, as the tactics will remain effective.
Defeating Keshta will grant you the ability to equip his phantom form along with other valuable rewards:
- 2, 976 Currency
- 5, 760 Tear
- Soul-Cleaving Greatsword
- Soul Eater’s Top
- Necklace Of Blessings
- Transmutation Mist x2
Equip Keshta’s Phantom at the Blade Nexus
Return to The Crevice and head over to the Blade Nexus to harness the abilities of Keshta’s phantom. You will now have access to the “Phantom Abilities”option.
Initially, you can only “accompany”Keshta’s phantom, but this early-game ability significantly increases your stamina recovery rate by 4%.Given that endurance is crucial in The First Berserker, this ability is imperative for your survival and can be upgraded for greater benefits.
You’ll also notice an additional phantom, Veronika the Advocate, on the menu, hinting at forthcoming enhancements. While you can’t equip her phantom just yet, it’s exciting to see what future allies you can obtain.
As you progress through other main levels in The First Berserker: Khazan, more phantom battles will become available. Make it a habit to take these detours to acquire powerful allies whenever they arise.
