7 Days To Die has launched its inaugural major update, bringing a variety of adjustments and bug fixes to enhance gameplay. The highlight of this update is undoubtedly the introduction of crossplay capabilities, allowing players across different platforms to team up. While some limitations exist, the update has been largely well-received by the gaming community.

Crossplay functionality has garnered increasing interest within the gaming industry, with both major publishers and independent studios striving to incorporate this feature into their titles. For 7 Days To Die, the focus on crossplay was paramount, and the developers, The Fun Pimps, successfully rolled out these enhancements just before the Christmas season of 2024, much to the excitement of fans.

Understanding Crossplay Mechanics

To utilize the crossplay features effectively, it is crucial for PC players to ensure their game files remain unmodified. Players have two primary options: hosting a session or joining an existing one.

Steps to Host a Session

Upon launching the game and selecting either ‘Continue Game’ or ‘New Game,’ you’ll find a series of settings on the right side of the screen. The hosting process is consistent whether you’re creating a new game or continuing an existing one.

The first step is to enable the Server option by setting it to online mode. With this setting activated, you can proceed to configure additional options. It’s important to set the Server Visibility to public, as setting it to friends currently does not support crossplay. If you prefer a private session, a password can be assigned to your game.

After setting the Server Visibility to public, ensure that Crossplay is enabled. Additionally, your Max Players setting should be capped at 8, as hosting with a higher limit will prevent friends from joining your game. Once these configurations are made, you can load your world, allowing your friends to join seamlessly.

How to Join a Session

Joining an existing session is a straightforward process. Start the game and select ‘Join A Game.’ You’ll be prompted to enter the gamer tag of the host you wish to connect with.

After you input the correct gamer tag, click ‘Start Search.’ If done correctly, the host will appear on your screen, enabling you to connect to their server. Should the host have set a password, you’ll need to acquire it beforehand to gain access. Once inside, you’re all set to explore, loot, and combat with your friends.

Limitations of Crossplay

Despite the excitement surrounding crossplay, there are notable limitations in 7 Days To Die. Foremost among these is the absence of dedicated servers; as detailed in the update’s patch notes, dedicated server functionality is currently in development and will be available in the forthcoming major update, dubbed ‘Storms Brewing.’

In terms of gameplay experience, the current maximum world size is set at 8192, which may satisfy many players, although some desire larger maps. The possibility of increasing this limit in the future remains uncertain.

Additionally, the cap for crossplay sessions is restricted to 8 players. While some users may seek larger party sizes, this limit is still adequate for a strategic gameplay experience. On the PC platform, remember that hosting modded worlds is not an option, so ensure all mods are disabled prior to initiating a crossplay session.

Another point to consider is that players utilizing the Japanese PS5 version currently lack access to crossplay features. Fortunately, this issue is expected to be resolved early this year, although no specific date has been confirmed yet.

Highlights from Update 1.2

The recent update 1.2 for 7 Days To Die has not only brought crossplay improvements but also introduced several beneficial bug fixes and enhancements. A notable fix addresses the earlier issue where Xbox and PS5 users struggled to locate their friends through the server browser.

An essential new feature is the inclusion of a blocklist within the settings menu. This tool empowers players to banish cheaters or disruptive individuals, allowing them to monitor and prevent these players from rejoining in the future. Cheating has unfortunately become a common issue in many online gaming environments, making a reliable blocklist an invaluable asset for maintaining a positive gaming atmosphere.

Additionally, players now benefit from new graphic options that provide greater control over performance. This is particularly advantageous for users on lower-spec systems hosting crossplay sessions, while those with high-end configurations can enhance visual fidelity significantly.

Furthermore, enhancements in Blood Mood Scaling have been implemented, allowing the game’s enemy spawns and difficulty levels to better match the skills and progress of players within a session, thus improving the cooperative gameplay experience.
